Miami-Dade Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz has criticised proposals to turn parts of the real city into a promotional setting for Grand Theft Auto 6, arguing that Vice City reflects crimes her department works to prevent.
The dispute follows a June proposal from Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava to Rockstar Games. The suggested “GTA VI × MDC” collaboration described Miami as the real-world inspiration for Vice City and outlined possible uses of approved game characters or visual references.

What the proposed collaboration included
The plans listed several potential ways to connect Miami with the upcoming game. One of the more prominent ideas was a Vice City Motor Fest, combining classic cars, customised vehicles, lowriders, motorcycles, tropical graphics and local entertainment in a controlled, family-appropriate environment.
The proposal has not been formally agreed to or approved. A spokesperson for the mayor confirmed that the collaboration remains unfinalised, despite the public discussion surrounding it.
The idea also highlights the continuing connection between driving games and arcade entertainment. RETROCADE’s racing simulators offer a dedicated way to enjoy the car-focused side of gaming, without treating a real city as a fictional crime setting.
Sheriff says the game conflicts with Miami-Dade’s public image
In a joint statement, Sheriff Cordero-Stutz said the Grand Theft Auto series is built around criminal activity. She specifically cited murder, robbery, drug trafficking, carjacking, violence against law enforcement and other behaviour that Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office personnel work every day to prevent.
“Its fictional world includes murder, robbery, drug trafficking, carjacking, violence against law enforcement, and other conduct that the men and women of the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office work every single day to prevent,” Cordero-Stutz said.
Miami-Dade Commissioner Juan Carlos Bermudez also objected to the proposal. Bermudez, a Republican candidate who may challenge Mayor Levine Cava, a Democrat, in 2028, said the county should promote the community it has spent decades building rather than a fictional version defined by crime and violence.
A familiar tension between fiction and place branding
Miami has long been associated with Vice City, but the proposed marketing partnership brings the contrast between fictional entertainment and real-world civic branding into sharper focus. The same setting can represent tourism, business and investment to local officials while serving as the backdrop for criminal escapades in a game.
