Mass Effect: Universe was cancelled after BioWare’s closure, and new reporting from former, anonymous developers offers further detail about the project’s development and its final months.

The report says the next entry was planned for a late 2028 release. Its reported setting was 600 years in the future, with a new central character and original-trilogy companion Liara T’Soni in a significant role.

The team had developed concepts covering large sections of the story, along with narrative systems intended to reflect player choices from across the franchise. Sources described development as progressing well overall, although some milestones were missed and the game was still some distance from completion.

Moving from Frostbite, the difficult engine used for Mass Effect: Andromeda, to Unreal Engine was reportedly making development easier. A presentation was changed before an executive demo

According to the developers quoted in the report, BioWare removed a flag from a presentation before showing a video proposal to EA’s management. The flag was said to resemble a Pride flag, and the change was made because the team feared it might create friction with executives.

The account emerged after Electronic Arts was acquired in August by the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund, Silver Lake Partners and Affinity Partners. The sources said the project’s presentations failed to persuade the new leadership that it was worth continuing, while BioWare staff already felt that Mass Effect had become a low priority within EA.

Following BioWare’s closure, reporter Sylvain Trinel said he spoke with former employees about the next Mass Effect and learned that some diversity-focused elements had been removed from demonstrations shown to EA executives.

Concerns about inclusion and corporate pressure

Trinel said the decision was made in anticipation of possible negative feedback under EA’s current ownership structure. He also pushed back on social-media interpretations that the team was trying to conceal inclusive content, describing the move instead as an attempt to anticipate a reaction from conservative executives.

After the acquisition, employees reportedly received assurances that the new owners would not directly make creative decisions. Those assurances came amid concerns about the Saudi Arabian government’s documented human-rights record concerning queer people, as well as Affinity Partners founder Jared Kushner’s links to the Trump family. Staff feared that studios and series known for inclusive storytelling could face pressure over queer characters and themes.

The reported demo change does not establish that the new owners directly ordered the removal. It does, however, illustrate how the expectation of criticism can influence creative decisions before executives formally intervene. BioWare was later shuttered following the acquisition, and the future tone of other EA properties, including The Sims, remains uncertain.

What happens to the cancelled project?

At the time of publication, EA had been contacted for comment and no response had been reported. The information available points to a substantial project with a long-term plan, but not one that had reached a finished or near-finished state.
