Rockstar has provided an unusually detailed look at why Grand Theft Auto 6 has taken almost a decade to develop. The explanation covers an ambitious early concept, difficult realism decisions, pandemic restrictions and an unusual leadership structure.
A new feature by reporter Jason Schreier examines the project’s development in depth. Rockstar also confirmed that the game began life as a much larger undertaking than the version now being made.
GTA 6 began with an enormous scope
Earlier reports described an early concept known as Project Americas, involving several protagonists and locations across North and South America. Rockstar has now confirmed that those plans were part of the game’s history.
The original idea was simply too ambitious. Its scale created practical problems and ultimately contributed to the project being pushed back by several years. Fans can read more about the early concept in reports covering the rumoured origins of GTA 6.

Realism created difficult design choices
The trailers and screenshots have highlighted an extraordinary level of detail, but recreating a convincing world required Rockstar to make countless decisions about how realistic the game should be.
Co-studio head Rob Nelson used a simple example: drinking a beer. Would the player buy alcohol, walk to a fridge, retrieve a bottle and open it manually, or should the action be simplified? Decisions like this affected the game’s scope as well as its moment-to-moment fun.

Many of these choices had to be made while substantial parts of the game were still unfinished. That left developers working with a degree of guesswork. Once the direction was established, Rockstar still faced years of work on complicated artificial-intelligence systems.
The development also includes detailed beard customisation inherited from work on Red Dead Redemption 2, while players will not have to wait for Jason to grow his hair in real time.
The pandemic restricted development
Rockstar said that working from home made progress more difficult during the pandemic. Some tasks could not be reproduced effectively outside a studio environment.
Performance capture was a particular challenge. Developers could not simply assemble a high-quality capture setup at home, and the process still required performers and other staff working together. Privacy requirements also prevented employees from accessing Rockstar’s servers and tools from home.

A complicated leadership structure added friction
The project was overseen by three heads of development. Each brought individual concerns and ideas, which sometimes conflicted with one another.
Nelson acknowledged that staff were unhappy with the hierarchy, although he noted that similar complaints can arise even when a game has one overall leader. Together with the early scope, realism questions and pandemic disruption, the structure became another complication in an already lengthy production.

The project’s focus on detailed interaction also shows how much planning goes into modern game worlds—an idea familiar to anyone comparing home setups with dedicated arcade machines or learning how to choose an arcade machine.

These factors explain why a game that began with an expansive vision required years of refinement. The full development feature contains further details about the decisions and setbacks behind GTA 6.
