Mass Effect Universe Was Planned as BioWare’s Ultimate Open World

Electronic Arts’ closure of BioWare has ended development of the studio’s final known project, Mass Effect Universe. Former developers have now described an ambitious single-player science-fiction game that aimed to move beyond conventional open-world design.

In an interview with the French site BFM, several unnamed BioWare developers said the project was intended to become the “ultimate open-world” game.

The news adds another entry to the growing list of unrealised projects discussed after the studio’s shutdown. For readers following the wider arcade news and gaming industry, it is a reminder that even ambitious projects can disappear before players ever see them.

A different direction after Mass Effect: Andromeda

The proposed direction is notable because Mass Effect: Andromeda, released in 2017, made its open-world structure a central part of the experience and received a lukewarm response.

Former developers said the new team planned to leave many of Andromeda’s ideas behind. Rather than limiting player agency to dialogue selections, the game was intended to consider how players approached situations more broadly.

It is not known whether that wider reactivity would have affected combat, quest design or other gameplay systems. The available accounts do not explain precisely how the planned mechanics would have worked.

Development moved to Unreal Engine

Work on the next Mass Effect reportedly made solid progress, although the project missed some deadlines and had to be restarted. A major factor was BioWare’s move from Frostbite to Unreal Engine.

Frostbite had been used for both Mass Effect: Andromeda and Anthem. The developers considered it a poor fit for open-world games and third-person projects, making the engine change an important part of the restart.

One developer, identified as “Sandra” under a pseudonym, said the team had to redo everything. Despite occasional setbacks, staff remained confident that the game could reach its proposed 2028 release window.

A cancelled project with no public release

That planned 2028 launch will not happen following EA’s decision to shut BioWare and cancel the single-player sci-fi game. The project’s reported progress makes the closure particularly significant: fans will never see how its ambitious open-world systems, story choices and combat ideas were meant to fit together.

Mass Effect itself may not be finished. The series still has a committed audience, and the performance of a planned Mass Effect television series could influence the property’s commercial future. A strong reception might even encourage EA to sell the intellectual property, although there is no confirmation that this will happen.

For now, Mass Effect Universe remains a lost chapter in BioWare’s history. Players interested in how interactive entertainment is brought to life can explore RETROCADE’s arcade videos, compare options in the arcade machine buying guide, or browse arcade machines for a dedicated gaming setup.
