Grand Theft Auto 6 attracted substantial attention when its first officially sanctioned gameplay footage received a short Netflix exclusivity window. The arrangement offered GTA fans an early look at the upcoming crime drama, while Netflix gained a major promotional event that could also direct viewers towards shows such as Stranger Things and KPop Demon Hunters.

However, the subscription impact appears to have been solid rather than record-breaking. Data from Ampere Analysis, reported by GamesIndustry.biz, indicates that approximately 100,000 people signed up during the six-hour period in which the preview was exclusive to Netflix.

A strong Netflix result, but not the biggest of 2026

The 26-minute showcase introduced viewers to Jason and Lucia’s criminal activities before becoming freely available on YouTube a short time later. Its Netflix performance was still notable: the extended look reached 31.1 million views, ranked first in 87 of the platform’s 93 countries, and was Netflix’s most-watched title for that week.

Even so, the subscriber increase was behind the spikes generated by the final season of Stranger Things and the Rousey versus Carano MMA fight. That placed the GTA 6 presentation third among Netflix’s biggest sign-up surges of the year.

High reactivation among returning viewers

Ampere’s figures also point to an unusually effective reactivation rate. More than five per cent of viewers who had not used Netflix for over 30 days renewed their subscriptions to watch the preview and then explored the wider catalogue. Ampere said that was a higher reactivation rate than any other film or series on the platform during that period.

The result is an interesting case study in how a major game can support a streaming promotion. Fans could subscribe for early access, but the footage soon became available elsewhere, reducing the need to maintain a paid subscription solely for the showcase.

Why the exclusivity window may have limited conversions

The presentation arrived shortly after a series of leaks involving an early build of the game. Those leaks may have reduced the urgency for some viewers, although many people were likely willing to wait a few hours rather than pay for access to footage that would soon be free.

Whatever the reason, placing a first gameplay trailer behind a paywall for only six hours produced a curious result: a sizeable audience and strong reactivation, but fewer new sign-ups than two other major Netflix events. It is also the sort of promotional gamble that only a globally recognised series such as Grand Theft Auto could plausibly attempt.

For readers following the wider business of gaming and entertainment, the result belongs alongside other arcade and gaming news. The campaign also highlights how modern game launches increasingly compete for attention across consoles, streaming platforms and online video, rather than relying on one advertising channel.

Grand Theft Auto 6 is scheduled to launch on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S on November 19. Until then, fans can explore RETROCADE’s arcade machines or compare options using the arcade machine buying guide.
