Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave was initially designed around eight story perspectives before the development team reduced the cast to four main heroes and added a fifth viewpoint character.

Nintendo’s developer interviews explore the game’s focus on family, its relationship with Fire Emblem: Three Houses and the creative decisions behind its expanding cast. The three published rounds of interviews also reveal how the team wanted the new game to go beyond its predecessor in scope.

From eight protagonists to four

Three Houses was a major influence on Fortune’s Weave. Producer Genki Yokota explained that the team first considered increasing the number of central story perspectives from three to eight, aiming to exceed the earlier game’s scale in every possible way.

That plan proved too difficult to manage, so the number was reduced to four. Their stories can still be followed in parallel, but the developers felt the game needed another character to connect the separate narratives and give players a wider view of the developing story.

Eshmel provides the wider perspective

Eshmel became the game’s fifth protagonist and the initial player character, filling a role comparable to Byleth in Three Houses. Director Toshiyuki Kusakihara said that following only the four heroes would not fully support the idea of several stories converging into one.

Eshmel was therefore created to observe and link the four protagonists’ journeys from a broader perspective. The arrangement allows the separate campaigns to retain their identities while contributing to a shared narrative.

Why are guns part of Fire Emblem?

The developers also discussed the series’ first appearance of firearms. Producer Masahiro Higuchi confirmed that guns were not added simply as a novelty, although the team has not explained their precise origin.

As players progress, they may discover why firearms exist in this world. The game also includes a time-travel element, which could offer a connection, but the interviews do not confirm how the two ideas relate.

What happened to the unused characters?

The team has not revealed the fate of the four protagonists removed from the original plan. They may have been reshaped into recruitable characters, abandoned during development or held back for another purpose. There is currently no confirmation that they will appear as downloadable content.
