Commander Shepard actors rally fans to save Mass Effect

Jennifer Hale and Mark Meer are urging the Mass Effect community to support a campaign aimed at reviving the series after BioWare’s closure and the cancellation of its next major project.
The news has unsettled fans of BioWare’s sci-fi role-playing series. The original trilogy earned a devoted following through its character-driven storytelling, memorable companions and expansive science-fiction setting. You can explore more gaming news in the RETROCADE Arcade Blog.
Why Mass Effect fans are campaigning
Concern about the franchise intensified after Electronic Arts was acquired by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund and private equity. Only a few months later, BioWare was shut down and a new Mass Effect project was cancelled.
The cancelled title had been announced almost six years earlier. It was previously referred to as Mass Effect 5 and later became associated with the name Mass Effect: Universe. Its disappearance has left fans questioning whether the series has a future.

The response has grown well beyond a small online discussion. A petition reportedly collected 130,000 signatures in three days, while the wider effort has become large enough for the Canadian government to consider offering assistance to BioWare.
Jennifer Hale and Mark Meer lend their voices
Jennifer Hale, the voice of the female Commander Shepard, addressed the campaign on X and asked fans to help bring Mass Effect back to life. Her idea imagined supporters, investors and a capable game studio working together through a Kickstarter-style effort and forming a collective to continue the series.
“You know what I like to think about? I like to think about a world where the fans come together to create a Kickstarter and then a couple of investors join them, and then a really cool game company joins them, and a collective is formed to bring Mass Effect back to life. For the community, for the creative, for all of us, and it’s amazing. That’s what I like to think about.”
Mark Meer, who performed the male version of Commander Shepard, shared Hale’s message and encouraged fans to sign the petition. His reply used familiar Shepard wording, including the calls to “hold the line” and “go” sign the petition.

What happens next?
A petition alone is unlikely to change EA’s decision, particularly after BioWare’s closure and the cancellation of the project. Even so, the campaign demonstrates how strongly players remain connected to the Mass Effect universe and its characters.
Whether the movement attracts the investors and development team imagined by Hale remains uncertain. For now, the community is continuing to make its case, hoping the end of BioWare’s project will not mark the end of Mass Effect.
