The Blood of Dawnwalker is not without shortcomings, but its strongest ideas give the vampire role-playing game a distinctive edge. Its achievement is even more notable given that it was the first release from a new studio developed with a reported budget of $40 million.

Bloomberg’s report says NetEase provided that funding in return for a 26 per cent share of Polish developer Rebel Wolves. The studio includes several former CD Projekt Red developers, among them The Witcher 3 director Mateusz Tomaszkiewicz.

For a young Polish studio, $40 million is substantial, although costs rise quickly when a team reaches 160 employees. Tomaszkiewicz is reported to have financed the project’s first year in 2022. Rebel Wolves reached release in 2026 by holding to its initial design: a day-and-night system that affects the protagonist’s vampire abilities, alongside a time constraint that prevents players from experiencing every event in one playthrough.

Building on a proven role-playing blueprint

The project also benefited from design lessons established by The Witcher 3. Rebel Wolves could adapt a familiar third-person action-RPG framework rather than develop every system from scratch, while still giving its debut game enough identity to reach one million sales during the year’s busiest retail period.

That disciplined approach has a clear parallel with arcade design: a strong core concept can matter more than an oversized feature list. Our arcade news and industry coverage explores how focused ideas continue to shape interactive entertainment, while the arcade machine buying guide offers a practical look at choosing hardware around the experience you want.

Rebel Wolves’ debut shows the value of protecting a game’s central pillars during production. In this case, the combination of vampire powers, shifting daylight and limited time helped preserve the original vision from pitch to launch—an approach worth considering when comparing the design and replay value of modern games with dedicated arcade machines.
