Blizzard Entertainment has announced that an animated Diablo series is in development at Netflix. The news was revealed by Blizzard president Johanna Faries during the opening night of BlizzCon 2026.
Faries said Blizzard had been working to identify creative partners capable of expanding the stories across its major universes. She described the project as particularly exciting, noting that she is both a regular Diablo player and a fan of Sanctuary’s dark fantasy setting.
At this stage, the announcement contains few production details. Netflix has not provided a release date, and the animation studio or creative team attached to the series has not been identified.
The project also arrives amid broader signs of closer cooperation between Xbox and Netflix. Around a month after Asha Sharma became Xbox’s new head, Netflix co-CEO Greg Peters reportedly discussed possible partnership ideas with her, including a combined Netflix and Xbox Game Pass subscription.
In July 2026, Sharma outlined plans to expand Xbox’s transmedia activity across film, television, consumer products, sponsorships and live events. She also mentioned developing new global partnerships, including in China. The strong performance of Amazon’s Fallout television series has demonstrated the potential value of adapting major game properties for television.
What the Diablo adaptation could mean
The Netflix project appears to fit Xbox’s wider push to develop entertainment around its game franchises. Faries also referred to other “exciting things” underway across Blizzard’s major universes, although no additional Netflix productions have been confirmed.
For now, fans will need to wait for more information about the story, format, cast, animation approach and launch window. The announcement nevertheless gives Diablo another avenue to reach audiences beyond the games.
