A report based on interviews with former BioWare employees says new management questioned the studio’s inclusive storytelling during development of the cancelled Mass Effect Universe project.

Former developers describe pressure during development
BioWare’s Mass Effect, Dragon Age and The Sims games have included same-sex romance and other LGBTQ themes for years. That history has become a source of concern for fans following Electronic Arts’ reported buyout by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, Jared Kushner’s Affinity Partners and private equity firm Silver Lake.
One example cited in the report involves the physical edition cover of The Sims 2. The usual artwork shows Sims in different poses, including a kissing couple and an alien. For the Saudi Arabian market, the cover was changed to show several expressionless male Sims instead.
Fans worried that private-equity ownership could affect BioWare’s identity, particularly after the studio’s recent difficulties. The report does not say that these concerns caused BioWare to close, but it suggests that requests to soften inclusive themes were already being made while the cancelled Mass Effect Universe game was in development.

A flag in a presentation reportedly raised concerns
Former BioWare staff spoke anonymously with French outlet BFM TV about the unreleased project. One former employee said new managers appeared unconvinced by the video proposals presented to them, adding that BioWare’s reputation for inclusive storytelling did not help overcome that scepticism.
The employee described one specific incident involving a presentation video. Developers were reportedly asked to remove a flag because it looked too much like the LGBTQIA+ flag, with the stated aim of avoiding offence. The interview does not identify who made the request, and it does not establish whether the team ultimately removed the flag.
The report describes an alleged management request, rather than a confirmed final change to the game or its presentation materials.
Why the report matters to Mass Effect fans
Mass Effect has built a strong connection with players from marginalised communities through its characters, relationships and wider themes. For many fans, the Normandy and its crew represented a welcoming space within a large science-fiction universe.
The project’s cancellation ends the opportunity to see how BioWare might have continued that approach. It also leaves an important distinction: the available account reports pressure during development, but does not prove that the disputed flag was removed or that the request came directly from a particular executive or ownership group.
