Mass Effect fans may eventually learn what stood behind the mysterious teasers created for Mass Effect: Universe, the cancelled project that followed BioWare’s ambitious plans for the series.

Fans have spent years examining early footage, an internal BioWare trailer and information shared by people who claimed to have consulted on the game. Reported details suggested that Universe would have been set 600 years in the future, acknowledged all three endings from Mass Effect 3 and introduced a new protagonist unrelated to both Commander Shepard and Pathfinder Ryder.

Those fragments left plenty unresolved, particularly the meaning of the project’s cryptic imagery. The team that worked on Universe before BioWare’s closure now hopes it will be possible to discuss those ideas publicly one day.

A future explanation for the 2020 teaser

Michael Gamble, the project director for Universe, has replied to several posts since BioWare closed. Most of his responses have involved thanking fans for their support, but one exchange addressed the original 2020 teaser.

The teaser showed the returning squadmate Liara T’Soni crossing a snowy world scattered with what appeared to be Reaper corpses. When a fan asked whether the imagery would ever be explained, Gamble answered “yes,” before clarifying that he meant he could explain it at some point in the future.

That response was not intended to suggest that the game might return. Gamble specifically did not offer hope to fans campaigning for Universe to be revived; he was only indicating that the teaser’s meaning could eventually be discussed.

What former developers can and cannot discuss

People who worked on Universe are likely still restricted by non-disclosure agreements following BioWare’s closure. Such agreements do not necessarily last forever, however, and some former developers have already shared selected details and spoken about the leaked trailer.

They have also made clear that certain information remains off limits for now. Until those restrictions change, fans will have to continue piecing together the project’s story from public teasers, leaks and carefully worded comments.

Fans continue to campaign for the project

A fan-led petition is calling for the game to be completed. Suggestions include EA transferring the project to another studio or licensing the intellectual property to a team that could help it “flourish anew.”

Some supporters replying to Gamble’s posts have asked him not to reveal anything yet. Their reasoning is straightforward: they still hope Universe can be saved and do not want potential story details spoiled before its fate is settled.
