Blizzard is looking well beyond its current release cycle, with Diablo 5 planned for spring 2029 and a new StarCraft game targeted for 2030. The unusually early announcements are intended to give players confidence in the studio’s long-term direction.

Johanna Faries, president of the Xbox subsidiary, said the strategy is about identifying Blizzard’s biggest projects for the next five years and demonstrating that the company can deliver them. She told Bloomberg that Blizzard wants to communicate confidence in its major investments and ship substantial games on schedule.

A new approach to long-term announcements

Publishing firm release windows this far ahead is a significant change for Blizzard, particularly because large projects can spend years in development before reaching a stable production phase. The company’s recent history shows how easily those plans can move.

Diablo 4 was announced at BlizzCon in 2019 with an expected 2022 release. Development delays, disruption and staff turnover pushed the game back to 2023 instead.

Blizzard has not traditionally operated with the annual, tightly coordinated schedule associated with Call of Duty. That series benefits from multiple studios working across a regular pipeline, while Blizzard’s major projects have generally taken a less predictable path.

Pressure behind Blizzard’s ambitious slate

The new commitments arrive alongside a reported strategy shift across Xbox. Xbox CEO Asha Sharma is reportedly encouraging studios to concentrate on major sequels and spin-offs, with a greater emphasis on releasing them consistently. It remains unclear whether that thinking directly influenced Blizzard’s new timetable.

The projects announced at BlizzCon 2026 will also be developed while Xbox carries out another 1,600 rolling layoffs over the following year. Faries described the convention as an oasis for developers and players, while identifying Blizzard’s creative culture as her highest priority.

Faries said preserving Blizzard’s distinctive cultural and creative character remains her ultimate focus, and that performing well for Microsoft should represent a shared success.

What the timeline means for players

For fans, the value of these announcements will depend on whether Blizzard can maintain the promised windows as development progresses. Spring 2029 is still years away for Diablo 5, while the new StarCraft is planned even further out in 2030.

That makes this less a near-term release update than a statement of intent. Players following the wider arcade and gaming news landscape will have plenty of time to see whether Blizzard’s renewed focus on delivery produces a more dependable release cadence.
