Zodiac is back on free streaming

A case built on fear, letters and unanswered questions
The story begins after an unknown attacker targets a couple at a lovers’ lane in July 1969. Soon afterwards, the San Francisco Chronicle receives encrypted letters from a person calling himself Zodiac. The writer threatens to kill 12 people unless the newspaper publishes his coded message.
Cartoonist Robert Graysmith studies the cipher and correctly concludes that it does not disclose the killer’s identity. Crime reporter Paul Avery initially doubts Graysmith’s theory, but the case gradually draws both men into a maze of clues, threats and speculation.
Obsession becomes the real danger
Zodiac is interested in the killer’s terrifying public persona, but its real focus is the damage the investigation causes. Graysmith becomes consumed by his pursuit of a chosen suspect, Arthur Leigh Allen, played by John Carroll Lynch. Avery takes a different path after receiving a threatening letter, yet he is also changed by a criminal who thrives on attention.
The unresolved case follows both men long after the initial crimes. Their fears, flaws and coping strategies become as important as the evidence itself, creating a psychological drama rather than a conventional solved-case procedural.
Robert Downey Jr. gives one of his most layered performances
Downey Jr. has played a wide range of memorable characters, from Charlie Chaplin in Chaplin (1992) and Harry Lockhart in Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (2005) to Tony Stark, Sherlock Holmes and Lewis Strauss in Oppenheimer (2023). His performance as Avery stands apart because of its gradual collapse.
Avery begins as a confident, sharp-witted journalist. As the killer’s threats and unpredictable notoriety take their toll, that confidence gives way to a damaged, haunted figure. Gyllenhaal’s determined Graysmith and Ruffalo’s weary Inspector Dave Toschi provide compelling counterpoints to Avery’s decline.
Fincher chooses precision over spectacle
Fincher avoids turning the Zodiac case into sensational entertainment. Like his later series Mindhunter, the film favours stark compositions, grounded performances and the painstaking routine of criminal investigation.
There is urgency throughout, but the film refuses to offer easy catharsis. Its conclusion is deliberately frustrating, reflecting the unresolved nature of the real case rather than forcing a neat dramatic answer.
Why the suspense still works
The film’s tension comes from uncertainty, not constant action. A glance between investigators, a disputed clue or a threatening message can carry more weight than a conventional shoot-out. Every new fact opens another theory, pulling otherwise rational people further into the conspiracy.
That restraint is what makes Zodiac such an effective crime thriller. It uses familiar genre elements—danger, pursuit and an elusive criminal—while questioning whether solving the case is possible and what the search costs those who refuse to let it go.
A strong choice for a focused movie night
With its long runtime and slow-burn approach, Zodiac rewards an uninterrupted viewing session.
