Zero Dark Thirty was Chris Pratt’s action-hero turning point

Before he became a major action star through Guardians of the Galaxy and Jurassic World, Chris Pratt was best known as Andy Dwyer in Parks and Recreation. Andy began as a supporting character whose accident connected Ann Perkins with Leslie Knope, but Pratt’s comic timing and easy charm helped the role grow into one of the series’ central parts.

Andy’s relationships with Ann and later April Ludgate developed alongside Pratt’s increasing importance to the show. The character made him a recognisable comedy performer, although it also reinforced an image that seemed far removed from the physically demanding roles Pratt hoped to play.

In a January 2026 interview, Pratt identified one film as the key step in changing that perception. That film, Kathryn Bigelow’s Zero Dark Thirty, is now available on Netflix.

Pratt also discussed the film on an episode of the Scene Stealers podcast, explaining how the role altered the way the industry viewed him.

Pratt’s role in Zero Dark Thirty

Released in 2012, Zero Dark Thirty follows the decade-long search for Osama bin Laden, the al-Qaeda leader responsible for the September 11, 2001 attacks. Mark Boal’s screenplay centres on Maya, an obsessive CIA analyst played by Jessica Chastain, whose pursuit of a crucial lead eventually leads to the real-life raid on bin Laden’s compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan.

Pratt appears later in the film as Justin Lenihan, a fictional Navy SEAL assigned to the raid team. Joel Edgerton plays team leader Patrick Grayston, but Lenihan quickly stands out as the unit’s most expressive personality. He questions the mission and challenges Maya over the intelligence indicating that bin Laden is inside the compound.

Maya makes it clear that she would have preferred to use a bomb rather than rely on the team’s equipment and tactics. Lenihan’s response to the operation combines scepticism with a relaxed, almost irreverent attitude. At one point, he plays horseshoes around camp, bringing a sociable presence to a group whose other members are generally more restrained.

During the helicopter flight to the target, Lenihan listens through wired headphones and jokes that the audio is a motivational talk by Tony Robbins. The moment offers a glimpse of the warm, playful energy Pratt would later bring to Peter Quill, while the raid itself shows a very different side of the actor.

Moving through the compound in darkness, Lenihan operates with controlled precision. He also stops to calm and guide children encountered during the confusion. The performance retains Pratt’s humour without turning the character into comic relief, making Lenihan credible as both an approachable soldier and a serious professional.

The performance that changed Pratt’s career

Pratt later recalled that audiences did not laugh when he appeared in Zero Dark Thirty. That reaction mattered because he had become accustomed to being treated as the funny character. The film demonstrated that he could project physical authority and toughness while preserving the likeability that made him successful in comedy.

“I was selling and portraying a badass, and people bought it,” Pratt said.

The film’s reception helped. It earned more than $132 million worldwide against a reported budget of approximately $40 million and received five Academy Award nominations.

Pratt had already auditioned for several Marvel parts, but the studio had repeatedly declined to cast him. He was initially reluctant to audition for Guardians of the Galaxy, while director James Gunn was reportedly uncertain about casting the actor known as the “fat guy from Parks and Rec”. Casting director Sarah Finn eventually convinced both men to reconsider.

By then, Pratt had a clearer idea of the performer he wanted to become: an action lead with genuine physical credibility and the comic instincts he developed on Parks and Recreation. His training for Zero Dark Thirty showed that he could also meet the visual expectations of that kind of role.

When Pratt later met Marvel executives, Kevin Feige reportedly showed a shirtless photograph taken during that training and asked whether Pratt could regain the same physique. Seven months later, Pratt was cast as Star-Lord.

Why the film still stands apart

Pratt’s career story is an interesting part of Zero Dark Thirty, but the film’s central achievement belongs to Chastain. Her performance makes Maya’s pursuit feel like an all-consuming, ten-year process built on intelligence gathering, persistence and a single-minded search for proof. Chastain won the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Drama for the role.

Bigelow also avoids presenting the raid as a straightforward patriotic spectacle. The sequence is dark and disorientating, reflecting the uncertainty and discomfort surrounding a covert operation. Pratt’s performance suits that measured approach: Lenihan’s humour makes the team feel human, but it largely disappears once the mission begins.

For viewers revisiting Pratt’s filmography, Zero Dark Thirty captures the moment his two professional identities began to overlap. It is a small but memorable role in a gripping thriller, and a revealing early step towards the action-comedy leading man he would become. Australian Netflix viewers can now use the film as a chance to see that transition for themselves.
