Best Buy is planning late-night store openings in selected United States locations for the The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time release on Switch 2. The event is scheduled for midnight Eastern Time on November 5, with a limited number of special-edition consoles and Switch 2 Pro Controllers also expected to be available.

The announcement gives collectors another potential opportunity to buy the hardware at its listed retail price, rather than turning to resellers. Best Buy has published the event details, while the availability information was also shared in an October 8, 2026 update.

Important: the late-night openings are limited to participating US stores, so Australian fans should not assume the event applies locally. Stock is also described as limited, making store participation and availability especially important.

A midnight launch feels unusual for a modern game release. Digital distribution and online retail have reduced the need for queues, but major Nintendo hardware launches can still bring crowds together. This one is particularly fitting for a game with the cultural reach of Ocarina of Time, even if some players would nominate Majora’s Mask as their favourite Zelda adventure.

Why the hardware may be the real attraction

Pre-orders for the limited-edition Switch 2 system and Pro Controller had already sold out at Best Buy and Target when the late-night event was announced. A special-edition carrying case was also unavailable for pre-order, suggesting that demand extends beyond the console itself.

There may still be stock at other retailers. At the time of reporting, a console pre-order could be added to a Walmart cart, although that does not guarantee continuing availability. The Best Buy event listing is the most useful place to check participating locations and the retailer’s latest information.

For anyone considering a dedicated home gaming setup, RETROCADE’s arcade machine buying guide covers the practical questions around space, controls and display choices. Our arcade machines collection also shows how a console-focused setup compares with a full upright cabinet, while bartop arcades offer a smaller alternative for limited rooms.

A rare return to the midnight-launch queue

The Switch 2’s earlier launch produced queues at retailers, and past releases such as Halo 3 demonstrated how a major game could turn a shop opening into a social event. It is unlikely that this release will recreate every one of those crowds, but a sought-after Zelda console could still bring fans out after dark.

That communal element is easy to miss in an era of downloads, delivery services and online pre-orders. For collectors, the November 5 opening is therefore more than a chance to secure hardware: it is a brief return to the shared anticipation that once surrounded big game launches. Australian readers will need to follow local retail announcements separately, as the confirmed late-night event is for selected stores in the United States.
