Yellowjackets season 4 is heading towards its conclusion, and the first trailer suggests the Showtime thriller will return to the brutal aftermath of the team’s rescue. The preview combines panic, disturbing flashbacks and a grim look at what the surviving Wiskayok High School footballers face next.
A darker look at season 4
The new footage places significant attention on the 1990s storyline. That focus may surprise viewers after the events of season 3, but the trailer makes clear that rescue will not end the team’s ordeal. Their return to civilisation appears to bring fresh fear rather than relief.
Showtime’s official synopsis sets up a final season shaped by guilt, rivalry and unresolved relationships:
The Yellowjackets race to bury their sins before rescue arrives — but the Wilderness has its own ideas about who gets out alive. After returning to Wiskayok, their secrets fester under the growing weight of what they’ve done and who they’ve become. Meanwhile in the present, two of the Yellowjackets prepare to kill one of their own as an old flame roars back to town with plans all their own. Turns out not every homecoming is a joyous one, and this one’s going to sting.
Season 4 begins on 20 November on Paramount Plus, the streaming service that is soon set to be discontinued. The trailer and synopsis together point towards a story that will spend considerable time examining the team’s years in the wilderness.
What is Yellowjackets about?
Yellowjackets follows a New Jersey high school football team after its plane crashes in the Canadian wilderness. The series moves between two timelines: the 1990s, immediately after the crash, and the present day, where the survivors confront the consequences of their choices.
Its opening scene establishes the show’s unsettling direction. A frightened young woman in a nightgown runs through the forest before falling into a pit of spikes. A second girl, dressed in a damaged football jersey and animal furs, later retrieves the body and prepares the remains for a ritual feast. Graphic images of people eating cooked human flesh introduce the series’ descent into a Lord of the Flies-style collapse.
A well-regarded series nearing its end
The Showtime original has earned broad praise and received 10 Emmy nominations, including one for Outstanding Drama Series. It is the second-most-streamed programme in Showtime history, behind Dexter, while season 3 delivered the show’s largest audience to date.
With its final chapter approaching, the series still has plenty of unresolved tension to explore.
