Xbox Game Pass cloud streaming is currently unlimited, but Microsoft plans to introduce monthly usage limits in November. The change will apply across the service, including its most expensive membership tier.

Microsoft says the new limits will affect around 4% of Game Pass subscribers. That figure is being used to reassure most players, although subscribers who rely heavily on cloud gaming will lose part of an existing benefit without a corresponding reduction in their subscription price.

New Game Pass cloud streaming limits

The planned monthly allowances for xCloud are:

  • Game Pass Ultimate: 15 hours
  • Game Pass Premium: 10 hours
  • Game Pass Essential: 5 hours

Microsoft has not said whether unused hours will carry over, so subscribers will need to wait for further details before they can plan around the new allowances.

Extra cloud hours will be sold separately

Players will also be able to purchase cloud gaming time by the hour without holding a Game Pass subscription. Microsoft has not announced the hourly price, which means the cost of continuing beyond a plan’s allowance remains unknown.

The company says usage-based limits reflect the expense of running cloud gaming infrastructure, particularly as more people play for longer sessions. In an explained in a blog post, Microsoft said the model will help it continue investing in reliability and performance.

More information is expected in November, including additional-hour pricing, which games qualify, where the system will be available and how players can monitor their remaining time. Microsoft also acknowledged that the practical outcome will be a higher cost for some users.

Free cloud gaming tests are also under way

Alongside the upcoming limits, Microsoft has already started testing a free, advertising-supported cloud gaming tier. Details about that trial and its wider availability have not been provided.

For players who prefer dedicated hardware and predictable access, the broader arcade news landscape offers a useful alternative to streamed play.
