World of Warcraft is returning to Northrend with a limited-time remix of Wrath of the Lich King, the game’s most widely recognised and beloved expansion.
The announcement came during the World of Warcraft: What’s Next panel at BlizzCon. Wrath of the Lich King follows Mists of Pandaria and Legion as the next expansion to receive Blizzard’s remix treatment. For more gaming news, visit RETROCADE’s Arcade Blog.
How the World of Warcraft remix works
Each remix is a temporary in-game event built around a particular expansion. Players create a new level-one character and progress rapidly towards the level cap while collecting powerful abilities. These effects can be deliberately playful, unusually strong or occasionally capable of disrupting the normal game balance.
Activities completed during the event award a dedicated currency. That currency can be exchanged for rewards including cosmetic items, mounts and pets that can be used in regular World of Warcraft. When the remix ends, participating characters can also be transferred into the standard game.
Blizzard condenses the expansion’s major patches and events into a much faster schedule. This allows players to revisit the central content and milestones of the era without following the original release timetable.
Why Wrath of the Lich King is a major choice
The previous two remix events proved popular, particularly during the quieter period between major retail expansions. Before the announcement, some players worried that the next event might focus on less popular releases such as Shadowlands or Warlords of Draenor.
Wrath of the Lich King represents a very different choice. It remains one of Blizzard’s best-known expansions and is widely regarded as one of the game’s most fondly remembered eras. The remix also provides a fitting lead-in to The Last Titan, the next new expansion, which is set in a reworked version of Northrend, the setting associated with the Lich King.
Release timing for the Wrath remix
Blizzard has not yet shared specific details about the event’s abilities, rewards, progression system or schedule. The company has confirmed, however, that players will return to the expansion’s icy setting in time for the Australian summer of 2027.
