World of Warcraft: Forever has entered beta, giving players who paid $30 to unlock the Skyborne Elves access to a limited portion of the game. While the new race, camping feature and additional quests are part of the appeal, the biggest player reaction so far is focused elsewhere: the scenery.

Players are stopping to capture sunsets, sunrises, misty forests, shafts of light through trees and other views transformed by the game’s updated lighting.

Classicorgrimmar

World of Warcraft: Forever is built around the original base version of World of Warcraft. It offers two visual modes: one that preserves the classic presentation, and another that keeps the original world, textures and models while adding revised lighting, water and other visual effects.

That approach gives the older-looking game a significant visual lift without converting it into an entirely different high-definition production. The result retains the tone of Classic WoW while showing what roughly two decades of lighting technology can add to familiar environments.

Classic landscapes in a new light

The response from players has been remarkably consistent. Community screenshots highlight warm golden-hour scenes, dramatic night views, atmospheric woodland areas and reflective water. Several players have shared their reactions in the stunning lighting discussion, while others have asked whether anyone else is enjoying the lighting changes.

Players have described stopping simply to take in the view, with screenshots ranging from sunsets and sunbeams to misty woods and city scenes after dark.

Orgrimmar at night has attracted particular attention, as have comparisons between the original-era version of Mulgore and its Forever presentation. One comparison also shows Mount Hyjal faintly visible in the distance. Water effects have received praise as well, with one community post calling Forever’s water gorgeous.

The wider collection of player reactions includes a Golden Hour screenshot, a night-time look at Orgrimmar and a comparison of Era and Forever Mulgore.

A modern treatment that preserves the old mood

The visual strategy has some similarities to the HD-2D style used by Square Enix: preserve the character and atmosphere of an older game, then use contemporary effects to give its environments more depth and polish. In this case, the original art direction remains central rather than being replaced by a full visual overhaul.

The Skyborne starting zone also benefits from the treatment. It has no original-era equivalent because Skyborne Elves were not part of the first version of World of Warcraft, but the area still carries the visual identity of older WoW while looking more refined.

Not every player prefers the updated presentation. Fortunately, Forever allows players who dislike the new look to switch these enhancements off and use the original classic mode instead.
