World of Warcraft: Forever was revealed at BlizzCon 2026 as an alternate take on the long-running MMORPG. It is designed for players who enjoy the slower pace and classic structure of World of Warcraft, while offering more than a straight return to the same dungeons and raids.

The game launches on 4 November. Hands-on impressions and conversations with lead Classic designer Tim Jones and lead encounter designer Mike Nuthals revealed several important details about its classes, raids, travel systems, add-ons and long-term plans.

1. Unusual class roles will not be available at launch

Season of Discovery became known for runes that enabled unexpected roles, including Shaman tanks and Mage healers. Forever will take a more conservative approach at launch.

The reworked Shaman talent tree is closer to the original Classic design than to the more experimental version suggested by abilities such as Spirit Weapons and Molten Blast. The developers said the game is built around a simpler class baseline, with stronger emphasis on each class retaining its intended identity.

That makes highly viable off-role builds, such as Shaman tanking, unlikely at launch. However, the team intends to keep discussing unusual class roles with players and has invited passionate feedback.

2. Every raid tier will support 10-player and 20-player groups

Flex raiding is not planned. However, every raid tier will include at least one 10-player option and one 20-player option, with some tiers also offering 40-player raids.

This means a group that does not want to assemble 20 or 40 players can still take part in challenging, rewarding 10-player raid content. The developers specifically want 10-player raiding to remain available in every tier.

3. Mount training will cost more gold

The designers did not comment on whether additional gameplay content could be placed behind future paywalls. They did explain that the effort required to earn a mount remains an important part of the game’s design.

In Forever, the gold cost has been adjusted so that it applies to riding training rather than being treated as part of the mount itself. Reaching level 40 will not provide free training. Seeing another player on a mount is therefore intended to signal time and effort invested in the game.

4. Warlocks remain important for group summons

Meeting Stones are still positioned outside dungeons, but they do not summon party members. They instead connect players with a new Looking for Group feature, allowing people to list and find groups for specific activities.

Without a Warlock, party members must still travel across the world to meet at the dungeon or raid. The developers consider that journey part of the social rhythm: players have time to gather, talk and prepare before spending 30 or 40 minutes fighting monsters together.

5. Add-ons will face retail-style restrictions

Specific add-on rules have not been fully detailed, but the developers confirmed that computational in-combat add-ons will be restricted in a similar fashion to the modern game.

Tools that automate calculations, marking or communication for players will not be available in the same way. The aim is to prevent software from handling decisions that the game expects players to make themselves.

6. One-button rotations are not returning

Forever will not include the one-button rotation feature. Players will need to manage their abilities rather than relying on a single input to automate a combat sequence.

7. PvP will use a new progression track

Players will earn honour by fighting in Battlegrounds and completing other PvP activities. That honour will advance them through a ranking system, with players able to reach rank 14 during a season or patch cycle.

Rewards will include cosmetic items and PvP armour with statistics. New battlegrounds, including the Darkspear Islands, will supplement the original Vanilla battlegrounds and give PvP players a more defined progression path.

8. The name Forever reflects a long-term character commitment

The title is intended to address a familiar concern with seasonal or time-limited versions of the game: what happens to a character when that experience ends?

Forever will have a level cap of 60 and is planned to grow horizontally rather than through an ever-rising level ceiling. Future content will continue to expand different parts of the game, while a legacy system will encourage players to create and develop alternate characters.

The broader promise is that characters and their achievements will remain meaningful over time. Rather than asking players to invest in a temporary version of the game, Forever is being positioned as a lasting home for that investment.

A slower, more deliberate version of Azeroth

These decisions establish a clear direction for World of Warcraft: Forever: classic pacing, meaningful travel, defined class roles and long-term progression, combined with new raid formats, battlegrounds and horizontal content. It is not simply a replay of the past, but neither is it pursuing the unrestricted experimentation of Season of Discovery.

That balance will be central to the game when it launches on 4 November. For readers comparing different forms of interactive entertainment at home, RETROCADE also offers a range of arcade machines, including compact bartop arcades.
