Wizardry 6 brings a Japanese classic to Steam
The influential Wizardry RPG series is preparing to return on modern hardware. A Steam release of the Super Famicom version of Wizardry 6: Bane of the Cosmic Forge is planned for 2027, with D4Enterprise developing the port and Drecom publishing it.
That announcement arrives during the series’ 45th anniversary year. First launched in 1981 by North American developer Sir-Tech, Wizardry helped shape major role-playing series including Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, Shin Megami Tensei, Fire Emblem and FromSoftware’s Souls games. Its influence has been particularly strong in Japan, where the franchise has produced more than 40 Japan-only spin-offs.
A demanding first-person dungeon crawler
Bane of the Cosmic Forge is a first-person dungeon RPG built around exploration, party management and turn-based battles. It was the first entry in the main series to use full-colour graphics, while also expanding character creation and progression compared with earlier instalments.
Combat offers weapon-specific melee skills and six separate schools of magic. The adventure also draws on mythology, folklore and familiar fiction, with references including Alice in Wonderland, hobbits and vampires.
The Super Famicom edition reaches PC
The upcoming release is based on the Japanese Super Famicom version, which originally arrived in 1995. Its atmosphere will remain intact, combining first-person castle exploration with command-based battles. A wicked lord and an evil sorcerer once joined forces during a magical war. Their search led them to the Cosmic Forge, a pen capable of making anything written with it become reality. After turning its power towards terror, the two allies eventually fought over control of the pen.
Now, new adventurers must enter the castle and discover what became of the Cosmic Forge, potentially changing the fate of both the artefact and the cosmos.
Important details for Australian retro RPG fans
There are currently no plans for an English localisation, and the release is not announced for platforms beyond PC. Players who cannot read Japanese may therefore find the game difficult to approach, despite the opportunity to experience a historically important RPG on current computers.
