Once a major name in 1990s PC gaming, the Wing Commander franchise has been quiet since the turn of the millennium. The series includes five main entries, 12 expansions, a Super Nintendo adaptation, novelisations, an animated series and a Freddy Prinze Jr. vehicle.
That long silence may be ending. At the Portland Retro Gaming Expo, EA producer Jim Vessella announced plans for a 30th-anniversary remaster of Wing Commander 3: Heart of the Tiger.
Original FMV footage is being restored
Vessella reportedly found more than 600 source tapes from Heart of the Tiger in EA’s archives. The material is now being restored, creating the possibility of a major improvement to the compressed full-motion video that was central to the game’s presentation.
The remaster is expected to run at 60 frames per second and include enhancements created by the community after the original release. Vessella also referred to “the Kilrathi Saga”, which suggests that the project may include all three games in the original trilogy. EA has not provided a complete feature list or confirmed a release date.

Why Heart of the Tiger matters
Heart of the Tiger casts players as pilot Christopher Blair in humanity’s war against the Kilrathi Empire. After transferring to the ageing carrier TCS Victory, Blair leads a covert campaign as environmental instability threatens the Kilrathi homeworld and his former partner Angel is captured.
The live-action sequences feature Mark Hamill, Malcolm McDowell, Tim Curry, John Rhys-Davies and Ginger Lynn Allen. By combining refined space-flight gameplay with ambitious cinematic scenes, the third game became widely regarded as a high point for the series and one of the strongest uses of full-motion video outside Sierra’s adventure games.

An unusual EA revival
The announcement is striking partly because it was made at a retro-gaming expo rather than through a conventional EA showcase. The publisher has not consistently revisited its older catalogue, with fan interest helping keep series such as Skate and Command & Conquer in the conversation.
Although Vessella is an experienced EA producer, he was not directly involved with the original Wing Commander games. Series creator Chris Roberts has spent more than a decade leading development of Star Citizen, adding another notable connection to this unexpected project.
For now, the restored source tapes provide the clearest indication of what the remaster could offer. Confirmation of its launch timing, final scope and whether the complete original trilogy will be included remains outstanding.
