Grand Theft Auto 6 is scheduled to launch this fall without a Switch 2 version, and Nintendo of America president Devon Pritchard has offered no indication that a port is planned. Whether Rockstar’s enormous open-world game eventually reaches Nintendo’s latest console appears to rest with Rockstar and publisher Take-Two.

“That’s going to be a conversation for Take-Two and Rockstar, but nothing to announce on my end at this time,” Pritchard told Variety.

That leaves Switch 2 as the only modern console not receiving GTA 6 this fall. Nintendo does, however, have a major first-party release arriving close to Rockstar’s open-world blockbuster: The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake is due on November 5, just two weeks before GTA 6.

Rockstar’s previous games are still absent

The uncertainty around GTA 6 also highlights the lack of several earlier Rockstar releases on Nintendo’s new hybrid console. Red Dead Redemption 2 remains unavailable on Switch 2, despite being released for PlayStation 4 and Xbox Series X/S. GTA 5 has not been ported either.

Virtuos, the studio behind the Switch version of Rockstar’s L.A. Noire, would welcome the opportunity to bring both games across. Technical director Fong said the team is keen to adapt Grand Theft Auto 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 for Nintendo’s hardware.

“We’re personally big fans and believe these games can shine again on the Switch, delighting even more players.”

That interest is notable for players weighing how modern open-world games could fit into a broader arcade machine collection, even though a Switch 2 port would still depend on Rockstar and Take-Two.

Four best-selling games are still missing

GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 are two of only four games among the ten best-selling titles of all time that are not available on Switch 2. The other two are PUBG and Wii Sports.

A successor to the latter, Nintendo Switch Sports Resort, is scheduled to arrive on October 22. That gives Nintendo another prominent release before the November launch window, although it does not answer the question of whether Rockstar’s biggest upcoming game can run satisfactorily on Switch 2.

Could GTA 5 be the more likely option?

If GTA 6 never comes to Switch 2, GTA 5 may be the more practical target. GTA Online remains hugely popular, and Rockstar has not announced plans to retire the service soon. A Switch 2 edition could therefore give Nintendo players access to the previous generation’s crime saga while the new game remains unavailable.

For players seeking Vice City-style mayhem on Nintendo hardware this November, the existing option is Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition, which is already available on Nintendo’s console.
