Grand Theft Auto 6 will launch with an $80 standard price, while the premium edition will cost $100 and include additional content. That makes it more expensive than other Take-Two Interactive releases, including the $70 NBA 2K27.

Take-Two is the parent company of Rockstar Games, and chief executive Strauss Zelnick addressed the pricing difference during the company’s Q1 FY27 earnings call on August 7. Zelnick took part in Take-Two’s Q1 FY27 earnings call, where investors asked why the highly anticipated game would cost more than other major releases.

Take-Two says value matters more than the highest price

Zelnick’s explanation was that Take-Two does not simply charge the maximum amount the market might accept. Instead, the company aims to deliver substantially more value than the purchase price. He also argued that producing a major AAA game costs consumers less in real terms than it did 20 years ago, because game pricing has not risen in line with inflation.

From that perspective, Take-Two considers GTA 6 an exceptional value at $80. Zelnick pointed to Rockstar’s reputation for delivering large-scale experiences and said the company’s decision was based on providing value rather than maximising the price.

Could GTA 6 have cost even more?

The discussion also suggested that Take-Two and Rockstar considered several possible pricing strategies. Zelnick said the standard edition’s $80 price represents strong value for some players, while the $100 premium version offers extra content for customers willing to pay more.

He added that the extraordinary interest in GTA 6 could have supported other pricing choices. In other words, the game’s enormous hype might have allowed Take-Two to charge more, but the company chose not to do so.

Exceptional pre-orders, but an uncertain sales forecast

Early demand appears to be very strong. Take-Two described GTA 6 pre-orders as exceptional before the earnings call, and Zelnick repeated that assessment while speaking to investors. He said the figures were unprecedented for Take-Two, making it difficult for the company to predict precisely how they will translate into final sales.
