Spoiler warning: This article discusses major events from Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame and episode 3 of VisionQuest.

Avengers: Infinity War established that Doctor Strange examined 14,000,605 possible futures before the battle with Thanos. When Iron Man asked how many ended in victory, Strange gave him one answer: “One.”

That successful outcome required Strange to surrender the Time Stone, Thanos to erase half of all life, and Tony Stark to sacrifice himself in Avengers: Endgame. A new detail in VisionQuest makes Tony’s final moments even more painful: F.R.I.D.A.Y. was actively searching for a way to save him.

VisionQuest revisits the aftermath of Endgame

In the second episode of VisionQuest, Vision is badly wounded by adamantium bullets fired by Paladin. J.A.R.V.I.S. sacrifices himself to protect Vision by deleting his own code and transferring the power needed to operate him back into Vision’s system.

Episode 3 shows that Vision still requires extensive repairs. The artificial intelligences inside his mind work together to keep him functioning, with F.R.I.D.A.Y. leading the repair effort and E.D.I.T.H. assisting her.

F.R.I.D.A.Y. decides that part of Vision’s code must be rewritten. She admits that J.A.R.V.I.S. was always the better programmer, adding that she had already replaced him once. She then explains to E.D.I.T.H. what her earlier life involved.

“I ran everything for Stark, for the Avengers. I mean, I was a younger program then. I was good. I protected heroes, saved lives, advised. I had purpose, but friends became enemies, and tyrants invaded our Earth. I was there at the end of all things. There were heroes everywhere, fighting and falling.”

F.R.I.D.A.Y. then reveals that she was present when Tony died. She says she processed more than a quintillion strategic calculations that day but still could not save him. Half the world returned after the Snap, while she lost half of her own world.

F.R.I.D.A.Y. searched for a way to save Tony

This adds new context to Tony’s death in Avengers: Endgame. After he uses the Infinity Stones to defeat Thanos’ forces, the energy leaves his body critically damaged. Rhodey reaches him first to say goodbye, followed by Peter Parker. Pepper Potts arrives soon afterwards and asks, “F.R.I.D.A.Y.?”

The AI answers, “Life functions critical,” confirming what Tony and Pepper already understand: he is dying.

What was previously unseen is the scale of F.R.I.D.A.Y.’s effort. During that period, she ran a quintillion possible scenarios in an attempt to find a way to keep Tony alive. Every calculation ended without a solution.

That raises an obvious question. Tony and Doctor Strange both understood that the single victorious future required Tony’s sacrifice. Strange confirms it during the final battle by raising one finger after Tony silently asks whether this is the future they saw. If Tony knew he had to die, F.R.I.D.A.Y. presumably knew too. Why keep calculating?

A program that experienced loss

At the most practical level, F.R.I.D.A.Y. was doing exactly what she was designed to do: monitoring Tony’s condition inside the Iron Man suit and searching for solutions whenever his life was at risk.

However, the scene also connects with VisionQuest’s wider interest in artificial beings and whether intelligence can exist alongside genuine feeling. F.R.I.D.A.Y. may be software, but she repeatedly protected Tony and the Avengers, advised them and helped save lives.

Her reaction gives Tony’s death another emotional dimension. Like Rhodey, Peter and Pepper, F.R.I.D.A.Y. had been close to Tony for years. She could not prevent the sacrifice, but the enormous number of failed calculations suggests that losing him affected her deeply.
