Fans waiting for more of Vinland Saga have received an unwelcome update. Makoto Yukimura, creator of the historical manga, says a third anime season is not currently in progress.
More than three years have passed since MAPPA’s second season aired, leaving anime-only viewers waiting to see whether Thorfinn’s story will continue on screen. Yukimura addressed the question directly after a fan asked whether there was any good news about season three.
“Sorry my friend, I have no good news about that. The project is not currently in progress.”
— Makoto Yukimura, October 22, 2026
The response, first highlighted by OtakuKart, does not rule out a future adaptation. It does confirm, however, that there is no active season-three project at this time.
Why Vinland Saga season 3 may be a long way off
The news is disappointing, although MAPPA’s workload provides some context. The studio is working on Chainsaw Man: Assassins Arc and the fourth season of Jujutsu Kaisen. Three additional anime projects—Beat & Motion, Oblivion Battery and Fall In Love, You False Angels—are also scheduled for release in 2027.
Because season three has not even been optioned, the earliest realistic arrival could be 2029, based on the production timeline discussed around the announcement. That remains a projection rather than a confirmed release window.
Another possibility raised by the situation is commercial performance. Exact Blu-ray sales figures for the second season are not available here, so there is no firm evidence that home-video results affected MAPPA’s decision. The series did perform strongly on streaming: Netflix listed season two as its third most-watched anime between January and June 2023.
The manga has already reached its conclusion
Yukimura’s Vinland Saga manga ended in mid-2025 after two decades of publication. That means the complete story is available in print, even while an animated continuation remains uncertain.

For now, Yukimura’s statement is best read as a status update rather than a cancellation. Season three is not in production, and fans will need to wait for any future announcement before expecting Thorfinn’s remaining journey to return to television.
