Vinland Saga season 3 is not currently in production

Fans waiting for more of Vinland Saga have received a disappointing update from creator Makoto Yukimura. The acclaimed historical manga became an anime in 2019, when Wit Studio produced its first season, before MAPPA handled the second season in 2023.

Yukimura responded to a fan on X asking about a third season. In his reply, he apologised and said he had no good news because the project was not currently progressing. Neither Kodansha, the manga’s publisher, nor MAPPA has issued an official announcement about season 3.

A story shaped by war, violence and regret

Vinland Saga takes place between Iceland and England during the 11th century. Its central character, Thorfinn, sees his father killed by Askeladd, the ambitious leader of a Viking group. Although his father taught him to reject violence, Thorfinn joins Askeladd’s band and waits for a chance to take revenge.

That pursuit turns Thorfinn into a ruthless raider who accepts killing and pillaging as part of life. His connection with Askeladd also becomes unexpectedly complicated, developing elements of mentorship. Thorfinn’s revenge disappears as a possibility when Askeladd dies during a conspiracy to assassinate Canute, the Danish king of England.

With his purpose gone, Thorfinn eventually becomes a slave on a Danish farm owned by the compassionate Ketil. A friendship with another enslaved person forces him to confront the damage caused by his past. After a painful period of reflection, he chooses to pursue the pacifism his father once practised.

That choice is tested when Canute moves to seize Ketil’s farm. The series uses this conflict to examine whether a person can reject violence while living in a society built around conquest and power.

Thorfinn’s journey remains unfinished on screen

The second anime season ended with Thorfinn determined to find Vinland, the legendary country where he and his companions hope to live without war. At present, however, there is no indication of when viewers might see the next stage of that journey, or whether the anime will continue at all.

The production is overseen by a committee involving Twin Engine, Kodansha, Production I.G. and MAPPA. This model brings several companies together to fund and manage an anime, but it can also contribute to delays and disagreements over creative direction. MAPPA has moved towards fully in-house production for some projects, including Chainsaw Man through a partnership with Netflix, but that arrangement does not apply to Vinland Saga.

Yukimura’s update does not rule out a future return, but it confirms that season 3 is not presently moving forward. Until a production announcement arrives, fans can revisit the existing episodes or explore more arcade and gaming videos from RETROCADE.

Why the series continues to matter

Vinland Saga stands apart through its thoughtful treatment of war, violence, grief and regret. Its historical setting supports a deeply personal story about the cost of revenge and the difficult work of changing direction.

That combination of character drama and moral questioning has made the series a strong introduction to anime for many viewers. While the wait for Thorfinn’s return continues, anyone planning a dedicated entertainment setup can also consult RETROCADE’s arcade machine buying guide for practical advice.

Yukimura’s public reply remains the clearest update available: the third-season project is not currently in progress.
