Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust is heading back to North American cinemas in 2027, giving the acclaimed anime film a much wider theatrical opportunity than its original US release.
GKIDS used the recent Anime NYC expo to announce that it has acquired North American rights to the cult classic. The distributor plans a full theatrical release, with further details still to come, and also intends to produce physical home media editions.
The film’s first United States release in 2001 was limited to just 12 theatres. Its planned return therefore represents a significant change in reach for a production that has built its reputation steadily through home viewing and anime fandom.
A gothic anime built for the big screen
Produced by Madhouse, the studio behind Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End, Bloodlust was directed by Yoshiaki Kawajiri. He was one of the key figures in the adult anime boom of the 1980s and 1990s.

In the film, a young woman appears to have been taken by the vampire Baron Meier Link. Her father hires D, a vampire-hunting “Dunpeal”, to bring her home. Why Bloodlust became a cult favourite
Although the film earned critical acclaim, it did not reach the same level of mainstream recognition as anime landmarks such as Akira and Ghost in the Shell. Its standing grew over time, particularly among viewers drawn to its elaborate production design and distinctive gothic setting.
Traditional hand-drawn animation is combined with digital compositing to create a densely detailed world. The visual design supports the film’s world-building as much as its action and atmosphere, making a cinema presentation an especially fitting way to revisit it.

More Vampire Hunter D projects are coming
The Anime NYC announcements extended beyond the film. Dark Horse announced Vampire Hunter D: Fortress of Blood, a new four-issue comic series. The eighth novel in the series, The Rose Princess, is also scheduled to receive an English translation in June 2027.
That gives the property a particularly active year ahead: a North American cinema release, planned physical home media, a new comic story and an English edition of another novel.
