Twitch streamers are protesting a new generative AI training setting that uses channel content by default. The platform has reportedly enabled the programme on creator accounts while placing the control to disable it inside security settings, rather than asking creators to opt in.
Why the default setting has caused anger
The issue came to wider attention after Twitch discussed its AI training programme during a livestream featuring chief product officer Mike Minton. Asked why creators could not actively choose to participate, Minton gave a blunt explanation: “If it was opt-in, nobody would opt in. Um, that’s honestly the answer. So it’s going to be on by default.”
“They know we don’t want it. They do not care.”
The backlash reflects a wider gaming-community resistance to generative AI. Players have criticised its use, while game developers have also pushed back against AI-generated material and related data practices. Streamers who broadcast games are now objecting to the same technology being applied to their own work without an upfront choice.
Critics describe the arrangement as deceptive because creators cannot reasonably be expected to switch off a setting they may not know exists. Gaming audiences have shown similar resistance, while developers have raised concerns about generative AI.

Creators share ways to disable it
Streamers have responded by spreading instructions for finding the relevant control and encouraging other creators to check their accounts. One post called the default arrangement malicious and said it went against the community’s wishes.
The practical complication is that opting out applies only to the individual channel. A creator who disables the setting on their own channel may still participate in chat on another channel where the setting remains active, meaning content from that chat could still be used for AI training.
To make that distinction easier to see, creators have begun adding the aioptedout tag to their channels. The tag is intended to signal that a channel has switched off the setting.
Streamers ask for an opt-in system
Creators are also using Twitch’s feedback forum to demand a different approach. The leading suggestion in the “Creators and Stream Features” section is titled “Make all AI features optional and opt-out by default”, although the request is clearly intended to make participation opt-in.
At the time of writing, the suggestion had received 15,714 votes. Streamers have also asked for a visible indicator that tells viewers whether a channel has opted out, but Twitch chief product officer Mike Minton said the platform had no plans to add one for viewers.

What this means for gaming creators
The dispute is another example of creators demanding clearer control over how their work is used. For streamers, the immediate concern is not only the default setting but also the lack of a channel-wide viewer-facing signal and the fact that opting out does not automatically protect conversations held elsewhere.
As the gaming community continues debating AI, creators are using public criticism, channel tags and platform feedback to make their position clear. Whether Twitch changes the arrangement will depend on how it responds to the growing demand for meaningful consent.
