Twitch has introduced a setting that allows channel content to be used to train Amazon’s generative AI models. The permission appears to be enabled by default, while the control to disable it is tucked away in account security settings.
The change became widely known on 12 August after streaming reporter Zach Bussey shared a screenshot of the new setting. The post also pointed users towards the relevant Twitch submenu, suggesting the option was added recently without a prominent announcement.
Twitch now uses your channel to train generative AI by default.
You can opt out of some training through the account settings.
Creators can find the control in Twitch’s security settings. If it remains enabled, Twitch says channel material may be used to “train generative AI content models at Amazon”. Disabling the setting does not remove Twitch’s own AI-powered functions, including automated commenting, advertising selection and chat moderation.
What Twitch content can be used?
Twitch’s FAQ about generative AI training gives audio as one example. A creator’s speech could help improve speech-to-text systems, potentially assisting captions on Twitch and elsewhere across Amazon’s services.
The FAQ indicates that the scope extends well beyond livestream video. Streams, video-on-demand uploads, clips, chats, images and written channel material may all be included in training data.
There is also an important limitation for creators who opt out. If they participate in another streamer’s channel and that channel has not opted out, their contributions in that stream’s chat or content may still be used for training.
Twitch explains why the setting is opt-out
During a Twitch livestream on Wednesday, head of community Mary Kish and chief product officer Mike Minton discussed the backlash. Kish said Twitch uses AI in many areas and that she did not believe the service could operate without “some forms of AI”. She also said she had personally disabled the training permission.
Minton was asked why creators were not asked to actively agree before their material became eligible. His answer was direct:
“If it was opt-in, nobody would opt-in. Um, that’s honestly the answer. So it’s going to be on by default.”
Later, the pair demonstrated how to reach the control, acknowledging that it is not easy to find. Minton referred to a study he said showed 50 per cent of adults now use AI tools such as ChatGPT, and said he would feel comfortable leaving the setting enabled if he were a streamer.
No public opt-in status for channels
The livestream did not resolve what happens when an opted-out creator appears alongside someone who has left training enabled. Minton described that scenario as a good question but did not provide a clear answer.
He also confirmed that Twitch has no current plan to provide a simple way for viewers or creators to see which channels have enabled or disabled AI training. Community feedback has been strongly critical, including a request on Twitch’s user feedback site for AI features to be optional and disabled by default.
Minton said the company understood where its community stood and that the feedback had been clear. When viewers questioned why Twitch had not emailed creators about the change, Kish responded that not everyone reads email and suggested direct messages and word of mouth may spread information further.
Why this matters for streamers
For creators, the issue is not simply whether they use AI-assisted Twitch features. Opting out of Amazon model training does not turn off moderation, advertising or other AI functions built into the platform, but it does affect whether channel material is made available for broader training purposes.
The decision also raises practical questions about collaborative streams, guest appearances and audience chat. Without a visible channel status, creators cannot easily determine how their contributions may be treated when they move between channels.
The development reflects the wider technology industry’s demand for more material to train generative AI systems. Amazon is competing in that market with companies including OpenAI and Google, while Twitch provides a large source of spoken audio, video, images and live conversation.
For Australian streamers, the immediate step is to review the account control and decide whether the default permission suits their preferences. The setting can be changed now, although the company has not indicated how long the opt-out will remain available.
