The cast of Final Fantasy VII Revelation came together at New York City Comic-Con for a panel reflecting on almost a decade of work across one of gaming’s most recognisable role-playing casts. While many performers have followed the project through Square Enix’s Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy, Travis Willingham is entering the story for its concluding chapter as Sephiroth.

Willingham, known for roles in games and anime as well as his position as CEO of the tabletop company Critical Role, is replacing Tyler Hoechlin as the series’ central antagonist. Hoechlin stepped away because of scheduling conflicts. The role carries considerable expectations: Hoechlin established a strong performance, while Sephiroth has been voiced by several actors during the character’s long history across Final Fantasy VII projects.

For his interpretation, Willingham identified Toshiyuki Morikawa as his primary reference point. Morikawa has voiced Sephiroth in Japanese performances for both Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts. Willingham said Morikawa’s ability to move from charm and restraint to danger and menace helped define the approach he wanted to bring to the final game.

Willingham described Sephiroth as someone whose uncertainty is part of his power: a character who can be inviting, threatening and difficult to read without losing control. Voice director Kirk Thornton’s guidance was that Sephiroth should appear ready for every situation, never confused or surprised. For Willingham, that makes a calm villain more threatening than one who has to raise his voice to command attention.

That controlled presence gives Willingham a clear point of difference to explore in a role that has already passed through multiple performances. Rather than relying solely on volume or overt intimidation, his version is being shaped around composure, ambiguity and the sense that Sephiroth is always directing events from the centre of the room.

Willingham is not the only Critical Role performer joining Revelation. The panel also confirmed that Marisha Ray will appear alongside her husband, Matt Mercer, as Polydroid Shiva. The non-player character is expected to meet the party during its journey when Final Fantasy VII Revelation launches on April 8.
