Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter Arrives in a Crowded September

September is shaping up as a significant month for role-playing games, with The Blood of Dawnwalker and Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave among the major releases. Nihon Falcom and GungHo are also bringing back one of the most respected Japanese RPGs of its era.

Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter launches as a modern remake of the nearly 20-year-old classic, following the overhaul given to Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter last year. Players looking for a substantial character-led adventure before FF7 Revelation arrives next year should keep this sequel in view.

A direct continuation with much larger stakes

2nd Chapter continues the story of Estelle Bright, who begins searching for her adopted brother Joshua after he disappears. Liberl remains politically vulnerable after the first game, even as it tries to project confidence by hosting major peace conferences.

Beyond its borders, two powerful nations are once again disputing a small city-state. One of those superpowers invaded Liberl a decade earlier, and the argument threatens to become a continent-wide conflict. A separate group, operating outside the usual political rules, is determined to push events towards war.

The sequel is generally more serious than its predecessor, although Falcom still makes room for absurdity. One memorable example is a tea party that leads to a battle against something resembling a Gundam.

Why the characters matter so much

The game combines the broad political storytelling associated with Final Fantasy 4 and Final Fantasy 6 with the closer examination of relationships seen in the modern FF7 Remake and Rebirth. Dragons, hostile empires, unusual magic and religious disputes all contribute to the setting, but the ensemble cast remains the heart of the experience.

This is also one of the rare role-playing games that strongly benefits from playing its predecessor first. At minimum, newcomers should watch or listen to a playthrough of Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter. Events and minor characters introduced earlier gain new significance, while unanswered questions become increasingly complex.

Estelle’s understanding of the world changes as she discovers that it is larger than she imagined and that even the people closest to her have hidden depths. Scherazard becomes more than the confident older-sister figure presented in the first game. Agate receives greater dimension beyond his abrasive personality, Tita gets a chance to take centre stage, and even Josette develops beyond her earlier comic role.

That care extends to the non-player characters, making the two Sky games a favourite part of the wider series for many players, even more than two decades and a dozen entries later.

A faster, more approachable battle system

The remake’s purpose is not simply to place the story on modern platforms. The original games reflected their time with lengthy encounters, long animations and a deliberately slow pace. The new version instead draws on the real-time and hybrid combat ideas used in the acclaimed Trails through Daybreak games.

Action mode gives players a small selection of moves for clearing routine battles quickly. Major encounters use a more involved turn-based system featuring standard attacks, crafts and arts. Crafts are special abilities that consume a resource, while arts are powerful spells that require time to cast.

Success depends on balancing physical and magical attacks with careful positioning. The remake does not use the retro tactical grid found in the original Sky games, but the approach introduced in last year’s Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter keeps ordinary fights brief while allowing important battles to feel suitably expansive.
