Nihon Falcom’s Trails saga is a substantial commitment: completing its roughly dozen games can take about 600 hours. The series began in 2004 with Trails in the Sky: FC and has continued across two decades and multiple consoles.

Unlike Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest, which generally tell a new story with each numbered instalment, Trails builds one large, politically charged narrative across its connected games. Individual arcs have their own beginnings and conclusions, but the series’ broader appeal comes from watching its world and characters develop over time.

That structure makes consistent terminology especially important. Last year’s Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter, a modern remake of Nihon Falcom’s first game produced with GungHo Online Entertainment, was well received for its updated visuals and gameplay. Its English localisation, however, drew criticism.

As many noticed significant irregularities, character names, pronunciations and user-interface terminology did not always match established Trails usage. That is more than a cosmetic concern in a series where a minor character or non-player character from one game can become important several entries later.

The issue has now received a substantial response. GungHo has announced a “Legacy Patch” for Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter that combines bug fixes with a broad revision of the English, French and German scripts. The update also includes new voice acting and some graphical changes.

Players can review the publisher’s patch notes for the full list of changes. The release represents an unusually extensive post-launch effort for a role-playing game, particularly because it aims to repair continuity rather than simply address technical faults.

Community discussion had highlighted how damaging the translation inconsistencies could be. One player’s Sky 1st Chapter translation makes me sad thread, shared by u/FerretFaerie in the Falcom community, reflects the frustration surrounding the original release.

A patch designed around series continuity

GungHo says the update was developed with Nihon Falcom to make the transition from Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter to later games smoother. Its priority was to revise English terminology and pronunciations according to their effect on continuity throughout the series.

The stated aim is to respect Trails’ expansive world-building while making the remake a more accessible entry point. With Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter only a few weeks away, the timing also suggests that GungHo wants its version of the opening arc to align more closely with what follows.

The patch notes refer to later games as well, hinting that GungHo intends to support the franchise beyond this individual remake and work towards a longer-term relationship with Nihon Falcom.

Questions remain about the original localisation

The Legacy Patch fixes the visible result, but it does not explain how the problems reached release. John Ricciardi of localisation company 8-4 questioned both the cause of the failure and the measures being taken to avoid a repeat.

Freelance translator Liz Bushouse said the original work was divided between two companies, with one responsible for translation and the other for editing. She also suggested that the team was smaller and less experienced with role-playing games than usual.

Freelance games critic James Galizio added that the project reportedly had about five months to cover the entire localisation, including voice recording. Ricciardi, who has worked on Japanese-to-English localisation since founding 8-4 two decades ago, described that schedule as exceptionally harsh.

Steam players can keep the earlier script

GungHo has created a separate update branch for the Steam release. This option delivers the new bug fixes without applying the revised localisation, allowing players to remain with the earlier script if they choose.

Maintaining separate patch branches requires additional work. The decision appears intended to address concerns from players who view changes to an existing game as censorship, although the continued usefulness of the original branch is uncertain—particularly if its names and terminology do not match Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter.

Debate over literal translation, adaptation and localisation will likely continue. For a series built on long-term continuity, though, correcting names, terminology and pronunciation before the next chapter arrives is a meaningful step. The Legacy Patch gives Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter a stronger foundation as the series seeks the wider audience it has long been positioned to reach.
