When the television version of Reacher arrived on Prime Video, readers of Lee Child’s novels finally saw a Jack Reacher who matched the character’s imposing physical description. Alan Ritchson brought the required size and an unstoppable presence to the former military investigator.

That response also sharpened the criticism aimed at Tom Cruise’s two-film interpretation. Cruise is 5 feet 7 inches tall, while Reacher is described in the books as 6 feet 5 inches. Lee Child eventually accepted that the character needed a taller actor, helping lead to the television reboot.

The first film deserves a second look

It is easy to dismiss the Cruise films after the success of the series, but Jack Reacher helped introduce the character to a much wider audience. The films were made on moderate budgets and performed well enough to establish the property before television took it in a new direction.

The 2012 film is also a sturdy crime thriller in its own right. It adapts the ninth Reacher novel, One Shot, and runs for 118 minutes. The story begins when former US Army sniper James Barr is arrested after evidence links him to a mass shooting in Pittsburgh. Barr somehow summons Reacher simply by writing his name on a piece of paper.

Reacher initially assumes Barr is guilty, but his investigation changes course. Working with Barr’s defence lawyer, Helen Rodin, played by Rosamund Pike, he begins to suspect that Barr has been framed as part of a wider criminal conspiracy. Werner Herzog plays the unnerving figure behind the plot, while Robert Duvall appears later as the irritable owner of a gun range.

A grounded thriller with flashes of spectacle

The film represents a particular kind of studio production that has become less common: a straightforward, street-level mystery supported by a major star, experienced character actors, location work, car chases and carefully judged action scenes.

Tom Cruise stands in the rain holding a big gun

Writer-director Christopher McQuarrie gives the film a measured crime-story rhythm, reflecting his earlier work on talkative, intricate thrillers such as The Usual Suspects and The Way of the Gun. At the same time, there are early signs of the larger-scale style he would later develop with Cruise through the Mission: Impossible films.

Tom Cruise looks determined behind the wheel of a cool muscle car

The clearest example is a long, expertly sustained car chase. Herzog’s disturbing monologue about chewing off his own fingers while imprisoned is another moment when the film leaves its realistic crime framework behind. Those heightened, almost comic-book flourishes give the otherwise moody production its spark.

Where Cruise fits — and where he does not

Cruise supplies the intensity, physical commitment and detective competence expected from Reacher. The film repeatedly treats him as an almost superhuman figure: a relentless drifter with exceptional combat skills and an uncanny ability to unravel complicated schemes.

That approach is entertaining, but it also exposes the central casting problem. Reacher needs to project cool control, while Cruise’s screen persona is built around effort, urgency and a near-manic drive to overcome impossible odds. That quality suits Ethan Hunt in Mission: Impossible, but it feels less natural when Reacher is investigating grimy streets and methodically removing criminals from his path.

The second film, Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, is a much weaker proposition and has been described as exceptionally dull. The first entry remains the more credible and enjoyable watch, even if the planned film franchise did not continue.

Free streaming gives it another chance

For Australian viewers, the first Jack Reacher film is currently available to stream free on Tubi. Its arrival offers a useful chance to reassess the movie separately from the casting debate and the later television series.

The film is not as faithful to Reacher’s physical description as the television adaptation, but it established the character on screen and delivered a well-made mystery with strong supporting performances.
