Magic: The Gathering releases often sell quickly, with shoppers sometimes unable to load the store before stock disappears. The attempted launch of Chaos Vault’s The Zeta Set reached a far more serious point, prompting Wizards of the Coast to publish an unusually direct apology.
“It was a disaster,” the company said, adding that there was no other way to describe what happened.
A highly anticipated Secret Lair release
The Zeta Set was created with New York-based art collective MSCHF. Its Secret Lair reprints were styled to resemble early card prototypes, using stock-photo collages, cut-out fanzine-style lettering and deliberately rough, fuzzy artwork.
One of the set’s most notable cards was a new version of Eternity Vessel. Its artwork shows a photograph of the original card inside a graded slab with a score of just 6, adding to the release’s distinctive appeal.
Wizards attempted to prepare customers for demand with 24 hours’ notice, instructions for a pre-queue and a randomised purchasing order for shoppers who joined the queue an hour before launch. The release attracted the same kind of anticipation seen around sought-after arcade collectibles and limited hardware, topics covered regularly on the RETROCADE Arcade Blog.

The launch did not go as planned. Reports from those who attempted to buy the cards said the scheduled hour-long queue was paused after approximately 30 minutes. It reportedly remained stopped for another 90 minutes, then sold out eight minutes after access resumed.
Some customers in the European Union also said the set changed from “available” to “out of stock” while the queue was still frozen. Even shoppers who reached the front appear to have had difficulty completing their purchases.
Orders and confirmation emails remain unclear
Wizards’ statement outlined several situations affecting customers:
- Customers who completed an order were thanked for waiting through the process.
- People unsure whether their order went through are being investigated.
- Customers who received duplicate confirmation emails were told not to worry.
- Anyone who believes they purchased The Zeta Set but does not receive a confirmation email within 24 hours was asked to contact customer support.
The company acknowledged that its support team was receiving a large number of enquiries and was processing them as quickly as possible. Customers have reported believing they completed purchases but receiving no confirmation, leaving their order status unresolved.
Investigation promised after the failed sale
Wizards said it was “incredibly sorry” for the experience and was investigating what went wrong. The company said the cause could involve an internal systems problem or external tampering, but that it needed time to establish the facts.
The Hasbro-owned business described the situation as frustrating and disappointing. It also warned that understanding the full problem could take some time, much as troubleshooting a failed arcade setup may require checking the cabinet, controls and software one step at a time. RETROCADE’s Arcade Machine Buying Guide offers a similar practical look at the components behind a gaming purchase.
Whether customers made it through the queue or not, Wizards said it would try to make things right. The company intends to assess completed orders, failed orders it can trace and other cases before providing a fuller update.
For collectors considering other limited gaming purchases, checking order confirmations and keeping transaction records remains sensible. The wider arcade machine range also shows how different the buying process can be when stock and fulfilment are handled outside a high-pressure online drop.
