The Wolf Among Us Remastered revisits a darker Fabletown

First released 13 years ago, The Wolf Among Us remains one of Telltale’s most distinctive narrative adventures. Based on Bill Willingham’s Eisner Award-winning FABLES comic series, the episodic noir thriller places familiar fairy-tale figures in a dangerous modern city.
The remaster arrives at an ideal time for curious newcomers and returning players, with The Wolf Among Us 2 slated for release in 2027. Its appeal is not built around constant combat. Instead, the game asks players to investigate, question witnesses and decide what kind of sheriff Bigby Wolf will become.

A murder mystery beneath Manhattan
Fabletown occupies a hidden corner of Manhattan, where princes, princesses, talking animals and other magical beings live among ordinary New Yorkers. These residents use enchanted disguises, known as glamours, to conceal their true appearances and protect their community.
The fairy-tale identities are far removed from their traditional storybook versions. Snow White, Beauty, Beast and Grendel are recognisable, but they are also flawed adults dealing with crime, poverty, prejudice and difficult personal histories. Their former titles and wealth have little value in a human society that often refuses to accept them.
The central case begins with a brutal discovery: a severed head is left on Fabletown’s doorstep. Bigby, the reformed Big Bad Wolf, must find the killer while protecting residents who still remember the violence associated with his past.

Every decision tests Bigby’s restraint
Investigation drives the experience. Players gather clues, speak with suspects and form their own theories as the crime reveals a much larger conspiracy. Dialogue choices and actions influence relationships, the wider community and the direction of the story.
Bigby’s greatest conflict is internal. He is supposed to be an authority figure the Fables can trust, yet his reputation as a monster is never far away. Players can approach confrontations carefully, follow procedure and seek cooperation, or use threats and physical force when patience runs out.
That tension gives the episodic structure real replay value. Different decisions lead to different reactions and outcomes, encouraging players to revisit scenes and reconsider how they handled key moments. The neo-noir presentation reinforces the mood through comic-book character designs, stark colours and a world that is decidedly more complicated than “happily ever after”.
Fairy-tale icons with real-world problems

The game’s mature reinterpretation works because its characters are not simply familiar names in new costumes. The Fables are refugees from the Homelands, stranded in an uncaring and corrupt system. They face discrimination, economic hardship and a sharp divide between those who retained privilege and those who arrived with nothing.
That social backdrop gives the investigation more weight. Solving the murder is not only about identifying a culprit; it is also about deciding whether Bigby will protect a vulnerable community or reinforce the fear surrounding him. The story can be bleak and confronting, but its desire for justice and a better future keeps the mystery compelling.

What the remaster adds
The Wolf Among Us Remastered provides sharper visuals and performance, along with multiple deleted scenes from the original game. Players can also activate Noir Mode for a black-and-white presentation that suits the detective-story atmosphere.
Its focus on investigation, dialogue and character choices offers a welcome alternative to games built primarily around combat. The subject matter can be heavy enough to warrant a pause between episodes, but the strong cast, sharp writing and layered mystery make it difficult to leave Fabletown behind.
