The Witcher 4 now has a planned 2028 release window, giving fans a clearer idea of when CD Projekt Red’s next major role-playing game may arrive.
CD Projekt Red confirms a 2028 target
More than a decade has passed since The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt launched, but the wait for its successor is not finished. CD Projekt Red joint-CEO Michał Nowakowski confirmed on Monday that the studio is aiming to release The Witcher 4 in 2028.
Nowakowski acknowledged that the timeframe represents a substantial wait and asked players to give the development team time to complete the game. Although the studio is scheduled to make announcements during Gamescom this week, he confirmed that The Witcher 4 will not be shown at the event.
“Let the team cook,” Nowakowski said while discussing the extended wait.

A longer plan for the next Witcher trilogy
The newly stated window follows an earlier announcement that the game would not launch by the end of 2026. At that point, CD Projekt Red had not provided a later release target.
The studio has also outlined an ambitious plan to release a new Witcher trilogy across six years. If The Witcher 4 arrives in 2028 and that schedule remains intact, the final instalment, The Witcher 6, could follow in 2034.
That would be a faster cadence than the original trilogy, which was released over eight years between 2007 and 2015. Modern game development schedules have generally grown longer across the industry, and delays affecting The Witcher 4 or later entries could change the proposed timetable.
Geralt returns before the new adventure
The next Witcher release is an expansion for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt called Songs of the Past. It will be presented at Gamescom, where Nowakowski has also hinted at “a surprise or two” across the studio’s livestreams.
Announced in May, Songs of the Past is described as an entirely new adventure starring Geralt. The character will take a supporting position to Ciri in The Witcher 4. The expansion is expected in 2027 for PlayStation 5, Windows PC and Xbox Series X.
