The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered has launched with a remarkable surge in player numbers, sending the 11-year-old open-world RPG to a new concurrent-player record on Steam. The free update improves the presentation, refines gameplay and gives returning players a strong reason to revisit one of fantasy gaming’s most celebrated adventures.

The game originally reached just under 100,000 simultaneous Steam players at launch. The remastered release has now climbed beyond 120,000 and was still rising. Steam is considerably larger than it was at the original release, particularly in regions such as China, while later sales and updates have also produced notable spikes. Even the 2023 next-generation update for PC and consoles did not approach this latest peak.

A 50 per cent discount is likely helping attract newcomers, while existing owners receive the remaster at no additional cost. Alongside visual and gameplay improvements, the update brings redesigned interface systems and additions such as a photo mode with on-demand weather and time-of-day changes.

The full list of patch notes covers more than 70 separate fixes and adjustments. Platform-specific changes include updated graphics modes on PlayStation 5 and mouse controls within menus on Switch. PC players targeting ultra settings should also note the demanding recommended hardware: a GeForce RTX 5080 and 24GB of RAM. Some AMD graphics-card users have reported problems due to missing driver support in the new update.

Switch 2 delivers a more convincing port

The Switch 2 version may be the most significant improvement for owners of Nintendo’s hardware. The original Switch release was an ambitious port, but its many compromises made it difficult to recommend, even when it was the only available option. The Switch 2 upgrade is free for owners of the previous version and appears to deliver an experience closer to the quality of last year’s Cyberpunk 2077 port.

Early reports place the Switch 2 version above the basic PlayStation 4 and Xbox One experience. Handheld footage suggests it is substantially better than the original Switch release and can look superior to those older console versions, although the resolution appears relatively low at approximately 720p. Results may vary, but the upgrade seems to fulfil much of the promise behind the first portable version.

Lighting, detail and one famous pigeon

Visual comparisons point to lighting as one of the most obvious changes. Improved shading and GTAO—ground-truth ambient occlusion—also contribute to the refreshed look, although global illumination has prompted some debate about the overall presentation. Players can compare the changes through the broader arcade and gaming news coverage at RETROCADE.

The update even caused brief concern among fans of an unlikely character: the low-poly pigeon. A pigeon photographed in 2023 became a popular Witcher meme, joining the game’s enduring bathtub images of Geralt. When a remastered street pigeon appeared with more detail, some players feared the famously crude bird had been removed or upgraded out of existence.

That worry was misplaced. Standing pigeons use a different model from pigeons flying through the air. The grounded version received extra polish, but the airborne low-poly model remains unchanged. The unofficial mascot has survived the remaster.

A worthwhile return to the Continent

After several days with the updated game, the overall impression is positive, even if not every visual alteration will appeal to every player. The combination of a free upgrade for existing owners, a current discount and improvements across multiple platforms has made this a particularly effective invitation to return.

For players considering a larger home gaming setup, RETROCADE’s arcade machine buying guide can help with planning space and hardware, while the broader range of arcade machines offers dedicated options for classic gaming rooms. The Witcher 3 remains a substantial RPG rather than a traditional arcade title, but its renewed popularity shows how convincingly a great game can hold up when a thoughtful update removes old barriers.
