Sydney Sweeney’s 2021 erotic thriller The Voyeurs has returned to the streaming conversation, climbing to No. 4 on HBO Max’s worldwide movie chart nearly five years after its original release.

The 116-minute, R-rated film first premiered on Prime Video in September 2021. Its renewed performance gives the lesser-known thriller a second life, even though its initial critical reception was mixed.
Sweeney’s career has become notably varied since her breakthrough as Cassie Howard in Euphoria. She has since played a champion boxer in Christy, a live-in housemaid caught in a disturbing mystery in The Housemaid, and a daughter drawn into a dangerous family crisis in Echo Valley.
She also served as both producer and star of 2024’s Immaculate, playing an American nun who uncovers something horrifying inside an isolated Italian convent. Her growing list of projects helps explain why an older thriller can suddenly attract renewed attention.

What is The Voyeurs about?
The story follows Pippa, played by Sweeney, and Thomas, played by Justice Smith, a young couple who move into their dream apartment in Montreal. Their new home offers an unusually clear view into the apartment opposite, exposing the private lives of their neighbours.
The couple across the way are Seb, a successful photographer played by Ben Hardy, and Julia, played by Natasha Liu Bordizzo. Pippa and Thomas initially watch them out of guilty curiosity, but Pippa becomes increasingly absorbed by what she sees.
When Pippa suspects that Seb is being unfaithful, observation turns into interference. She begins crossing personal boundaries and involving herself in the neighbours’ lives, pushing the film towards a darker story of obsession, temptation and dangerous assumptions.

From that point, The Voyeurs becomes a twist-driven erotic thriller. Its escalating revelations are central to the experience, so viewers who prefer to go in cold should avoid reading detailed plot summaries.
The film currently holds a 45% score on Rotten Tomatoes. While the overall response was divided, Sweeney’s performance attracted praise and the film developed a reputation for taking its twists in increasingly bold directions.

Sydney Sweeney’s upcoming projects
Sweeney’s next film is not arriving immediately, but her schedule remains busy. She is due to return as Millie in The Housemaid’s Secret, a sequel to The Housemaid currently scheduled for 17 December 2027.

She is also set to appear alongside Noah Centineo in Netflix and Legendary’s live-action Gundam film. Another confirmed role is Undine Spragg in an adaptation of Edith Wharton’s The Custom of the Country.
Her other announced project is Scandalous!, in which she will portray Hollywood figure Kim Novak opposite David Jonsson as Sammy Davis Jr. The film marks the feature directorial debut of Colman Domingo, Sweeney’s Euphoria co-star.

A streaming revival rather than a new release
The Voyeurs is not benefiting from a fresh cinema campaign or a newly announced sequel. Instead, its renewed visibility comes from viewers discovering a 2021 title on a different streaming platform.
Its rise to No. 4 on HBO Max’s global film chart, as tracked by FlixPatrol, shows how quickly streaming audiences can revive an older release. For Sweeney, it is another reminder that her back catalogue continues to find viewers while her next wave of projects moves through development.

Until Sweeney’s next film reaches audiences, The Voyeurs is proving that an older thriller can still generate momentum when streaming viewers give it another look.
