The Royal Shakespeare Company has announced the complete cast for George R. R. Martin’s Game of Thrones: The Mad King, a new stage production opening next week.
The first cast portrait places Michael Shaeffer as King Aerys II Targaryen at its centre. Around him are performers playing Ashara Dayne, Elia Martell, Queen Rhaella Targaryen, Robert Baratheon, Lyanna Stark, Brandon Stark, Rhaegar Targaryen and Eddard Stark.
What The Mad King is about
The play is set a decade before the events of the A Song of Ice and Fire novels and the Game of Thrones television series. Much of the story unfolds during a dinner banquet held in the final years of Aerys II Targaryen’s reign.
That period is a crucial chapter in the history of Westeros, establishing the circumstances that lead into the later story. The production also offers a new interpretation of characters who have previously been associated with the television adaptation.
Recasting familiar figures is an expected part of bringing a franchise into another medium, whether on stage or in other forms of entertainment and gaming. The announced cast includes characters not shown in the portrait, including Maxim Ays as Ser Jaime Lannister.
