The Legend of California, the upcoming survival game from former Overwatch developers Jeff Kaplan and Tim Ford, will now enter early access in 2027 rather than 2026.

Development is being handled by Kintsugiyama, the studio founded by Kaplan and Ford. The game is planned for PC, with early access releases scheduled for Steam and the Epic Games Store.

The revised window was confirmed during a Reddit AMA. An earlier reply from the game’s official account had also mentioned the move to 2027, although the change had not previously been discussed in detail.

Why The Legend of California was delayed

The Legend of California is a multiplayer survival game set in a fictional version of California during the Gold Rush era. Players will be able to establish a ranch, gather resources by mining and explore the wider frontier. Its online design also includes elements inspired by massively multiplayer games.

That scale has created technical challenges, particularly around server performance. Kaplan said the third alpha build suffered from performance problems and did not meet the team’s release standards. He also indicated that Kintsugiyama is satisfied with the game’s feature and content progress, but still needs to reach specific server-performance targets.

The official account had already referred to the 2027 timing in a post on X. The AMA provided the clearest explanation so far for why the early access launch moved beyond its original 2026 target.

Planned features and platforms

Kintsugiyama is still considering several systems for the game. Kaplan and Ford discussed potential additions including:

  • Private servers
  • Mod support
  • A full mine-collapse and support system
  • Pets

These features are not presented as confirmed launch content. They are longer-term ideas the developers would like to support as development continues.

Ford also confirmed that the studio is discussing a possible GeForce Now version with Nvidia. However, the game will not come to consoles during its early access period.

Another alpha test is scheduled to run through Steam from 12 November to 18 November. Players can follow the game’s Steam page for information about the test and future PC release plans.

What the delay means for players

For Australian PC players, the revised launch means The Legend of California is now a 2027 early access prospect rather than an imminent 2026 release. The delay appears focused on making its online infrastructure reliable enough for a multiplayer survival game, rather than expanding the announced platform list.

Its combination of frontier exploration, ranch building and resource gathering gives it a different focus from traditional arcade fare.
