The Family Plan blends family comedy with action
Mark Wahlberg has built a career across two distinct screen personas. He is familiar as the serious action lead in films such as Shooter, Lone Survivor, Deepwater Horizon and the Transformers series, but he has also played broader comic roles in The Other Guys, Ted and Daddy’s Home.
The Family Plan, released on Apple TV in 2023, sits between those two styles. It combines a suburban family setup with car chases, hidden identities and a former assassin trying to protect the people closest to him.
Almost three years after its debut, the action-comedy has returned near the top of Apple TV’s streaming charts, reaching No. 4. Its continuing visibility shows how accessible, straightforward genre entertainment can keep finding viewers long after release.
What is The Family Plan about?
Wahlberg plays Dan Morgan, a seemingly ordinary car salesman living in the suburbs with his wife Jessica, portrayed by Michelle Monaghan, and their three children. The family believes Dan is exactly what he appears to be, but his past is considerably more dangerous: he was once an elite government assassin.
When people connected to that past locate him, Dan takes his family on an unexpected trip towards Las Vegas. He presents the journey as an impromptu holiday while concealing his former profession and using his combat skills to keep everyone safe.
A modest critical reception did not stop its popularity
The film received a mixed response from critics on release. It currently has a 27% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes, with negative reviews often pointing to its reliance on familiar action-comedy formulas.
That critical reaction did not prevent Apple from continuing the story. The Family Plan 2 arrived in 2025, bringing Wahlberg and Monaghan back for another combination of domestic disorder and action. The sequel moves the Morgan family into trouble during a European holiday.
Why the formula remains easy to watch
The appeal is uncomplicated: a recognisable family situation is placed inside an action plot, allowing Dan’s carefully maintained suburban identity to collide with his professional past. The contrast gives the film both its comedy and its momentum.
For viewers looking for a light action film rather than a demanding thriller, that balance can make The Family Plan a convenient streaming choice. Its chart position nearly three years on suggests that a familiar premise, a recognisable cast and brisk genre pacing still have plenty of shelf life.
