The End of Oak Street, originally known as Flowervale Street, begins with a familiar suburban nightmare. Greg and Denise Platt, played by Ewan McGregor and Anne Hathaway, wake to find their once-quiet neighbourhood overrun by enormous dinosaurs.
The setup recalls suburban creature features such as Gremlins and Poltergeist, while its prehistoric predators naturally invite comparisons with Jurassic Park. David Robert Mitchell, director of It Follows, uses those recognisable ideas as the starting point for a much stranger science-fiction story.
That unusual premise has led some fans to wonder whether the film belongs to the Cloverfield universe. The theory gained traction because J.J. Abrams produced the movie through Bad Robot, the company associated with several Cloverfield projects.
Is The End of Oak Street part of Cloverfield?
The short answer is no. Abrams has confirmed that The End of Oak Street is not a Cloverfield spin-off.
Abrams is closely linked with the franchise alongside Drew Goddard, who created the Netflix series Daredevil. The original 2008 film used found-footage filmmaking to follow six survivors during a devastating monster attack in New York.
After that film’s success, Abrams and Goddard acquired two unrelated scripts and reshaped them into franchise entries. The Cellar became 10 Cloverfield Lane, while God Particle developed into The Cloverfield Paradox.
10 Cloverfield Lane centres on a hostile event that makes the Earth’s surface uninhabitable. The Cloverfield Paradox follows astronauts testing a particle accelerator, an experiment that opens access to other realities and helps explain the creatures and supernatural disasters seen across the earlier films.
That multiverse framework made the Oak Street theory plausible to some viewers: perhaps the Platts’ disaster was another consequence of the accelerator experiment. However, the connection is not part of the film.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Abrams said the only link was the casting connection between Ewan McGregor’s partner and Mary Elizabeth Winstead, who starred in 10 Cloverfield Lane. He added that viewers were drawing connections from similarities they noticed themselves.
So, despite the producer, the monster-movie tone and the speculation surrounding its title, The End of Oak Street stands alone rather than extending the Cloverfield story.
How does the film’s time travel work?
The film’s major twist involves time travel rather than a particle-accelerator catastrophe. Following a destructive storm, the Platts and their entire neighbourhood are drawn through a huge portal resembling a wormhole.
The portal sends them back to the prehistoric age of the dinosaurs. Their suburban routines and 1980s setting are a disastrous match for the carnivorous creatures surrounding them, and many of the neighbours are killed by dinosaur attacks.
The End of Oak Street does not provide a detailed scientific explanation for its time-travel mechanics. Instead, the device supports the film’s central contrast: ordinary suburban life is abruptly displaced into an ancient and lethal world.
That approach also separates the movie from Cloverfield. Rather than relying on the franchise’s established mythology, it explores its own combination of domestic horror, science fiction and dinosaur survival.
