Supergirl has found an encouraging second life on streaming. After a disappointing cinema run, the latest DC Studios film reached the top of HBO Max’s US movie chart following its 10 September debut.
It currently sits ahead of Practical Magic, Fuze, Band of Brothers: Legacy and The Last Samurai. Internationally, however, the picture is different. FlixPatrol lists the nearly 30-year-old Practical Magic as HBO Max’s leading film worldwide.
The older fantasy film may be benefiting from the cinema release of Practical Magic 2, which arrived in theatres the previous day. Despicable Me 3 is also continuing to perform strongly on the service.
How much did Supergirl earn at the box office?
Supergirl opened in cinemas on 26 June and made $126.4 million against an estimated production budget of $170 million to $186 million. Once marketing and other expenses are included, films commonly need to earn roughly twice their production budget to become profitable.
That theatrical result does not necessarily settle the film’s commercial future. Streaming and rental income can help recover losses after a weak cinema run. Reviews were mixed overall, although critics highlighted Milly Alcock’s performance as the title character, and the middling reception may have contributed to the film’s box-office difficulties.

What is Supergirl about?
The film follows Kara Zor-El, Superman’s cousin, after the events of 2025’s Superman. Kara takes on the Supergirl identity but struggles to adapt to life on Earth. Instead, she spends much of her time partying and drinking in space.
Her situation changes when she encounters a dangerous space bandit who poisons her dog. Kara then sets out to find an antidote while trying to stop Ruthye, a young woman determined to pursue violent revenge.
Supergirl is the second film in James Gunn’s DC Universe and belongs to its opening “Gods and Monsters” chapter. The next major release is the horror film Clayface, scheduled for cinemas on 23 October. A direct sequel to Superman, titled Man of Tomorrow, is set for 9 July 2027.
A streaming rebound, not a theatrical triumph
Reaching No. 1 in the US gives Supergirl a stronger streaming start than its cinema performance suggested, but it does not erase the gap between its $126.4 million box office and its estimated production cost. Its longer-term result will depend on how consistently audiences continue watching and renting it.
