The new Street Fighter film takes plenty of liberties with Capcom’s fighting-game universe, but one character change has proved especially difficult for longtime fans to ignore: Cammy barely resembles the character they know.

Cammy’s history makes the change stand out

Cammy began as one of M. Bison’s brainwashed Dolls: young women controlled by the Shadaloo organisation. Since her introduction in Super Street Fighter II, however, she has become one of the series’ most recognisable heroes, fighting Bison and reclaiming control of her own life.

The film instead presents her as Bison’s trusted right hand. That basic premise is compatible with her history, but the performance and characterisation are not. This Cammy is commanding and capable, yet also flirtatious, volatile and unusually theatrical. Her behaviour has led fans to compare her with Harley Quinn rather than the disciplined, reserved soldier seen in the games.

Mel Jarnson plays Cammy after appearing as Nitara in the 2021 Mortal Kombat film. In this adaptation, she is among the few characters who does not spend the entire story cowering beneath Bison. She carries out his commands with authority, but the film also gives her sudden angry outbursts and a surprisingly seductive manner, including a flirtatious exchange with Chun-Li.

Did the film give Cammy Juri’s personality?

That combination has encouraged a persistent fan theory: the filmmakers wanted to use Juri Han, but could not make her fit the story. Juri was introduced in Street Fighter IV, placing her outside the apparent Street Fighter II-era framework used by the film. She also has no natural reason to serve Bison, given her hostility towards him.

Instead, viewers see a character who looks like Cammy but displays traits they associate with Juri: cruelty, manic energy and provocative behaviour. One fan discussion on Reddit questioned the sudden scream during a scene with Bison and compared Cammy’s presentation with Sindel. Other reactions argued that the film appears to have placed Juri’s attitude inside Cammy’s role.

The central complaint is not that Cammy serves Bison at this point in her story. It is that the film makes her behave like an entirely different character.

A social-media reaction posted on October 16, 2026 made the same Juri connection, suggesting that the production wanted to use her far more directly.

Mind control could leave the door open

The movie does not spend much time explaining Cammy’s condition, but Jarnson has said in a recent interview that this version of the character is mind-controlled, like the other Dolls.

That detail could provide a route back to the Cammy fans recognise. If Bison’s control is broken in a sequel, the exaggerated behaviour might disappear and give way to the more hardened soldier established by the games.

For now, though, Cammy’s transformation remains one of the film’s most conspicuous departures from the source material. The adaptation treats several characters loosely and rarely aims for strict consistency, but changing Cammy from a controlled, stoic fighter into a flamboyant and sadistic presence is arguably its most dramatic character decision.
