September has brought new reasons to revisit several established arcade platforms. StepManiaX and Pump It Up Phoenix have received additional rhythm-game content, while QBIX has expanded its mixed-reality game library and is developing another title.
StepManiaX receives Content Update #42
Step Revolution has issued Content Update #42 for StepManiaX, adding five songs to the game. The update is not connected to Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy, despite the tempting number association.
The exact current song total was not confirmed, but the original release included more than 200 tracks. If most updates have added five songs, with some reportedly adding seven, the game has gained at least 210 additional songs through its content updates.
Pump It Up Phoenix adds more tracks
Pump It Up 2023 Phoenix had been available for less than a month when this update was reported, yet Andamiro was already expanding its roster of more than 500 songs. The accompanying trailer highlights seven new tracks, including two from K-Pop.
The update also includes other adjustments, such as corrections to several step issues. More info on the update can be found here.
QBIX expands beyond rhythm games
QBIX by Inowize takes a different approach from the two dance games. The system sits closer to mixed reality than virtual reality because players do not wear headsets or other wearable equipment. Instead, game visuals are projected across three surrounding walls, supporting multiple players and multiple titles on the same installation.
The platform debuted last year at IAAPA 2022. At the time of this update, three games were available for QBIX installations. Fright Maze, which appears to have been shown at Amusement Expo 2023, had received its first trailer or promotional video here. Pack-A-Boom was the newest release, while a fourth game was in development with no further details available.
Pack-A-Boom
Pack-A-Boom appears to combine ideas associated with Pac-Man and Bomberman. The trailers do not show the modified HTC controllers previously seen with QBIX, although the reason for that change was not confirmed.
Update costs and availability
The StepManiaX and Pump It Up updates are free. QBIX content may involve an additional cost, so operators should confirm pricing and availability with their distributor or sales representative before planning an installation update.
