Stephen Root Confirms His GTA 6 Role as Brian Heder

Stephen Root has confirmed that he appears in Grand Theft Auto 6, revealing his role before Rockstar Games formally announced the casting. The actor says many fans may already have recognised his voice in the game’s trailers.

Stephen Root reveals his GTA 6 character

Root discussed the casting at the BAFTA TV Tea Party after being asked about reports linking him with Grand Theft Auto 6. He confirmed that players will see him in the game and explained that the character had appeared in an early promotional rollout nearly a year earlier.

The actor believes the secret became difficult to maintain because viewers familiar with his work on King of the Hill could identify his voice. Root has been part of the animated series since its beginning, playing Hank Hill’s neighbour Bill Dauterive and Hank’s boss Buck Strickland.

Who is Brian Heder?

Root plays Brian Heder, described in Rockstar’s official character descriptions as a classic drug runner from the golden age of smuggling in the Florida Keys.

Brian allows Jason, one of Grand Theft Auto 6’s protagonists, to live rent-free at one of his properties. That arrangement comes with obligations: Jason must carry out local shakedowns for Brian.

Stephen Root’s screen and voice work

Root is nominated for an Emmy for playing Wyck Crawford in Widow’s Bay. Outside King of the Hill, Australian viewers may also know him from the television series NewsRadio and the film Office Space, both released in the 1990s.

When does GTA 6 release?

Grand Theft Auto 6 is scheduled to launch on Nov. 19, 13 years after Grand Theft Auto 5 arrived in 2013. The game is planned for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, with the source material specifying a digital-only release.

The game will take players to a fictionalised version of Miami, include a nudist camp and receive a dedicated special-edition PlayStation 5 controller. Scalpers have already been reported to be affecting access to that controller.
