Stephen King’s next novel returns to one of his less frequently revisited worlds. Other Worlds Than These is scheduled for release on 6 October and completes the trilogy that began with The Talisman, his 1984 collaboration with the late Peter Straub.
The new book arrives more than 25 years after the second instalment, Black House. It also expands a story with a distant connection to King’s Dark Tower mythology, making this a useful time to revisit Jack Sawyer’s journey before the final volume appears.
Where the story began
The Talisman takes place in 1981 and follows 12-year-old Jack Sawyer. His mother, Lily Cavanaugh, is a former “Queen of the B-Movies” who is dying from terminal lung cancer. After moving from Los Angeles to a New Hampshire tourist town, Lily is also trying to stay clear of Morgan Sloat, her late husband’s business partner. Sloat is wealthy, dangerous and barely hides his involvement in Phil Sawyer’s death.
Jack’s unlikely guide is Speedy, a local maintenance worker who introduces him to the Territories: a magical parallel world that mirrors Earth in symbolic ways. Most people have a counterpart, or “twinner”, there. Jack is unusual because his Territories duplicate has already died.
Lily’s twinner is Queen Laura, ruler of the Territories and another victim of the same illness. Somewhere in the Territories’ version of California lies an object capable of healing them both. With Speedy teaching him how to “flip” between worlds, Jack begins a cross-country quest to find the Talisman and save his mother.
What happened in Black House?
Published in 2001, Black House moves the story into the fictional French Landing, Wisconsin. Jack is now an adult and a former LAPD homicide detective who has taken early retirement.
When a series of child abductions overwhelms the local sheriff, Jack agrees to help investigate. The case soon reaches beyond the ordinary world: the missing children are connected to the Territories and to the Dark Tower. If Jack cannot rescue the latest victim, the Tower itself could fall, threatening all existence.
King and Straub wrote both novels by alternating sections. Straub described the original planning for The Talisman as face-to-face work in his Westport, Connecticut, office, followed by drafts exchanged in person or sent back and forth by modem. In King’s afterword to Black House, he also noted that Straub had proposed the links between that novel and the Dark Tower series.

A final journey for Jack Sawyer
King and Straub had spoken separately about a third book soon after Black House was published, but scheduling conflicts kept the project dormant for roughly 25 years. Shortly before Straub died in 2022, he sent King a long letter about the proposed novel. King ultimately completed Other Worlds Than These alone, drawing on Straub’s notes as well as his own ideas.
King’s official book page describes an older Jack facing a rampaging group of infected teenagers on Earth while confronting a Territories force known as the Gullet.
A preview published by Esquire includes the first chapter, but it reveals a major part of Black House’s ending. Readers who want to avoid that spoiler should finish the earlier novel before reading the preview.
The first edition is planned to include 38 black-and-white illustrations by Gabriel Rodriguez, who previously worked with King on Fairy Tale in 2002.
Why the trilogy still feels contemporary
The Talisman has spent decades in development discussions. Steven Spielberg has held the rights through Universal Pictures for more than 40 years and has made several attempts to adapt the novel for film and television. Around 2009, Amblin Entertainment developed a six-hour miniseries for TNT, but the project did not proceed.
A later Netflix television version involving Matt and Ross Duffer, the creators of Stranger Things, had also fallen apart by December 2025, as reported at the time. The trilogy’s completion could renew Hollywood interest, although no new adaptation is confirmed.
The books’ parallel worlds now resemble ideas familiar from Silent Hill and Everything Everywhere All at Once, while the unsettling settings of Black House anticipate modern horror’s interest in liminal spaces, including Exit 8 and the Backrooms.
