Stephen King has offered an early endorsement of Prime Video’s forthcoming Carrie miniseries, calling the adaptation “brilliant” before its release. The project revisits King’s 1974 horror novel, which launched his career as a bestselling author.
In a post on Threads, King also praised the series for its commentary on online life, describing what it has to say about social media as “shocking and true”.
The eight-part production is being developed by Mike Flanagan, who is updating the story for an era of smartphones, online harassment and cyberbullying. The central character and broad storyline remain familiar, while modern technology gives the adaptation a new way to explore its themes.
Who stars in the new Carrie series?
Summer H. Howell leads the cast as Carrie. Samantha Sloyan plays Margaret White, with Siena Agudong as Sue Snell, Amber Midthunder as Miss Desjardin, Alison Thornton as Chris Hargensen, Joel Oulette as Tommy Ross, Josie Totah as Tina, Arthur Conti as Billy, Thalia Dudek as Emaline and Matthew Lillard as Principal Grayle.
The guest cast includes Michael Trucco, Crystal Balint, Kate Siegel, Rahul Kohli, Tim Bagley and Heather Graham. Sloyan is also known for The Pitt, while Agudong appeared in Resident Evil, Midthunder starred in Prey and Lillard has credits including Scream and Man of Tomorrow.
When does Carrie premiere?
Prime Video will release the eight-episode miniseries on 7 October, with every episode arriving at the same time. Australian viewers will be able to watch the complete season rather than waiting for weekly instalments, although the exact local release timing has not been provided.
Flanagan brings considerable horror experience to the project through series such as The Haunting of Hill House and Midnight Mass. He has also directed several Stephen King adaptations, including Gerald’s Game in 2017, Doctor Sleep in 2019 and The Life of Chuck.
The collaboration is set to continue after Carrie. Flanagan and King are also working together on a future adaptation of The Mist, based on King’s 1980 story.
A modern horror story with familiar foundations
King’s comments place the new series among the more closely watched horror adaptations heading to streaming. Its contemporary setting may shift the details surrounding Carrie’s isolation and persecution, but the production is retaining the core character and overall narrative of the original novel.
