Steal an Egg became Roblox’s most visible experience before disappearing abruptly, with its treadmill-based progression drawing comparisons to a bleak science-fiction scenario.
How Steal an Egg works
The pet-simulation experience centres on collecting, hatching and raising eggs. Each hatched egg becomes a pet that produces money every second, while rarer creatures generate more income than ordinary animals. Players may begin with a simple chicken and eventually work towards creatures such as dragons.
Every player has a base, but it is not completely secure. Other people in the same server can take stored assets, and eggs can also be stolen from biomes across the map. Each biome has a guardian, with the most valuable eggs protected by the toughest challenges.

The treadmill controversy
Movement speed is central to making progress. Players can pay real money to improve it, or build speed by exercising on an in-game treadmill. Those treadmills include a feature called Reels, letting players watch videos while the repetitive activity continues.
Images of the mechanic spread across social media, prompting players to describe the experience as dystopian. Several widely shared screenshots came from a YouTube video posted by Foltyn, which attracted 1.3 million views.
A familiar science-fiction comparison
Many reactions connected the treadmill system with “Fifteen Million Merits”, an episode of the science-fiction series Black Mirror. In that story, people pedal stationary bikes to earn the money needed for basic living expenses and electricity.
Steal an Egg is not as severe: its players choose to participate, and they are not forced to cycle to survive. The game’s treadmill also does not punish users for looking away from advertising in the way the episode’s society does.
Why was the game removed?
The experience was taken down suddenly on Monday afternoon, shortly after reaching No. 1 on Roblox and attracting millions of negative social-media reactions. Before its removal, it had more than 500,000 concurrent players. That was below the peak figures achieved by Steal a Brainrot and Grow a Garden, but still enough to make it the platform’s most prominent experience at the time.
Roblox had not immediately provided a reason for the removal. One possibility was that the treadmill feature conflicted with the platform’s rules or with the policies of services such as TikTok. Roblox permits users to share links from an approved list, which does not include TikTok or Instagram Reels, and it restricts games from directing players to unapproved websites.
The developers also did not explain the takedown on Discord. They said the game would return within a few hours and promised compensation, with one developer writing: “Everyone getting extra stuff as a sorry.”
Convenience, monetisation and risk
The treadmill idea reflects a familiar gaming habit: many players listen to podcasts or watch videos while completing repetitive tasks. The difference here is that the grind is connected to microtransactions, rather than simply being a routine part of levelling a role-playing-game party.
There was also a practical concern. Roblox may not have been able to control what players watched through the in-game feature, creating the possibility of unsuitable or unexpected content appearing alongside the game.
